I'm sure Obama thinks it would cost him the election if he did the same, and who knows, it might actually cost him the election if he did the same.
One thing for sure, though. Barack Obama WILL NOT come out in support of full marriage equality before the coming election. There's just no f**king way. His "evolution" will come, if at all, when he's safely out of the White House.

Posted: 5/7/12 at 8:45amI wouldn't have said this until very recently, but I think Obama would benefit from taking a strong stance in favor of gay marriage. I'm not sure the youth vote will be as inspired as they were four years ago, and since Romney will almost certainly support the GOP platform which will favor DOMA, it would draw a clear distinction. Marriage equality polls substantially better than it did four years ago, and crucial independent voters favor equality by a wide margin.

Saying, "I am comfortable with it" is a whole lot different than saying, "Gay marriage should be legal in this country."
This "endorsement" doesn't excite me in the least.

That's cause you're not gay. This message was some kind of coded dog whistle for gay people about Obama's mythical second term and how during said mythical second term is going to shift from representing the Center Right to representing true progressiveism. Or something.

There's the unspoken followup to that statement, to the effect that they won't lifte a finger to ADVANCE those rights either. Progress in this matter will not come from Barack Hussein Obama.

He had majorities in both House and Senate when he took office, and still didn't lift a finger. Forget about Obama endorsing marriage equality while in office, folks. It ain't gonna happen.
His campaign motto this time is FORWARD. It might be more accurately summed up as STASIS.
