Yes, I agree it changes the entire meaning. But, I'm sure no amount of explanation is going to satisfy everyone. So, I leave it for others to make their own calls.

"It makes slightly more sense in this context."

It still doesn't make sense because Kerry didn't do so great in school either.

So it all depends on what the definition of "is" is, really, then?

This is not going to play well no matter how it's spun. It was a blunder and something we didn't need this close to the midterms.

Oh please, there's no interpretation issue here. Kerry was all over CNN today, clearly stating "I was talking about the president, not the troops." He clarified, and he's allowed to think Bush is a boob if he wants to. If only he had these balls before.

I hate to break it to the GOP-posters, but a huge portion of this great land of ours thinks Bush is a shallow, incurious elitist who shouldn't be sending the brightest and best to be blown up while they act as rent-a-cops in chaotic Bagdad. All of this tsk-tsking about "supporting the troops" is the usual right wing spin. Hating Bush doesn't make you UN-American. On the contrary, for many -- including many troops and their families -- it defines a passionate, very patriotic fervor.

Yes, I suppose you could say that, or perhaps you could use the phrase "stay the course" instead of "is". It's all semantics right?

Kerry can explain all he wants. I hate to say it won't work. Just like it doesn't work when Bush says he's never neen the "stay the course" guy.

And are we forgetting an important deciding factor in deciding to enlist? Economics.

Who gives a SH*T was Kerry said? Is he running for office?

George Bush LIED to get us into a war, then INSULTED the troops by UNDEREQUIPPING them, MISMANAGING the strategy and TURNING HIS CHICKEN-HAWK BACK on their coffins and limbless bodies when they returned.

THAT's "insulting the trops"!

O spin, ye losing Republicans, spin. Congressional investigations begin in January.

Of course George Bush has never misspoke. Here are a few examples of his fine rhetorical skills. I particularly like the 2nd one.

"This morning my administration released the budget numbers for fiscal 2006. These budget numbers are not just estimates; these are the actual results for the fiscal year that ended February the 30th." --George W. Bush, on the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30, Washington, D.C., Oct. 11, 2006"

"You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror." --George W. Bush, interview with CBS News' Katie Couric, Sept. 6, 2006"

"President Bush: "Peter. Are you going to ask that question with shades on?"
Peter Wallsten of the Los Angeles Times: "I can take them off."
Bush: "I'm interested in the shade look, seriously."
Wallsten: "All right, I'll keep it, then."
Bush: "For the viewers, there's no sun."
Wallsten: "I guess it depends on your perspective."
Bush: "Touche.
--an exchange with legally blind reporter Peter Wallsten, to whom Bush later apologized, Washington, D.C., June 14, 2006"

Apparently a lot of people care. It's being covered in the press, and here on BWW. He's still a Senator, isn't he? If you're in politics, you're always campaigning.

Oh for God's sake. We all know Bush misspeaks all the time. He's a proven idiot.

Kerry's misstep warrants discussion because some of us expect more from the Dem leaders.

Well, the nature of language is that it exists in context. And that the receiver of a message decodes the message for meaning.

Let's all try to at least coordinate our decoding with the intention of the senders, and with respect to context.

Isn't it astounding that the most inconsequential trivia is seized upon and treated as if it's of vast significance in the election? One senator made a clumsily worded, unfunny joke. So what? I doubt that a lot of people care. The whole incident reeks of being one of those manufactured controversies (think "war on Christmas").
