while it could have been a quickly dispensed with non-issue, the senator demonstrated how tone deaf he is with his vitriolic response. this would have been a less than one day story had he come out right after, held a press conference and said,

"earlier today, i misspoke during a speech. a comment that was meant to poke a little fun at the president came out wrong. i can understand hearing it how some people could find it offensive and i'd like to apologize to anyone who was offended. the last thing i meant to do was to disparage in any way the brilliant men and women who make up america's armed forces. you're going to hear a lot about this in the next few days and when you do, remember that those who are attacking me for a slip of the tongue for which i take full responsibility have yet to take any responsibility for the close to three thousand of our best and brightest consigned to dusty deaths before the mirage of this administration's failed policies."

I am with PJ that I was never really a Kerry fan.

I wonder if the families of the 100 dead soldiers in October are finding Bush "plenty smart" as they wake on November 1 without their sons, dads, brothers or uncles??

What Kerry should have done to derail his critics was to say he flubbed a joke and apologize to the troops and their family for anything he said that may have been misconstrued.

The Republicans are out of material and the best they can do is beat up on John Kerry and show pictures of illegal immigrants crossing the border and tell us that the Democrats will raise your taxes.

MJHV, by what measure could it possibly be perceived that having John Kerry by his or her side would benefit a campaigning candidate? I mean, it's not as bad as W, who's out there raising money for candidates who really don't want to be seen in the same camera shot with him, but still.

So, he has now apologized for a botched joke. When do we get an apology for a botched war?

"Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a "botched joke" that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.

Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator's remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday's elections, in which the party's control of Congress is at risk.

Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be "a distraction."

A day after rejecting calls to apologize for his remarks, Kerry, appearing on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show on MSNBC, declared: "I said it was a botched joke. Of course, I'm sorry about a botched joke."

While campaigning in California on Monday, Kerry told a college crowd: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Kerry's office said the senator had misread his prepared remarks. They said he had intended to say, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush"

It wasn't a joke because Kerry has absolutely no sense of humor. If he wanted to tell a joke, he has enough money to hire Bruce Vilanch to write him a joke and teach him how to deliver it.
