Has there been a public figure in recent memory who looks as ill at ease in the public eye as John McCain? Perhaps some of his physical stiffness is a result of his imprisonment, but the man never, ever looks comfortable in his own skin.
When he smiles, all I can think of is "Addams Family Values" when the camp directors force Wednesday to smile. It just looks uncomfortable and a little scary.

Posted: 9/4/08 at 11:20amYeah, it is like McCain is living out Wednesday's great line, "I'm not perky. But I want to be."

Posted: 9/4/08 at 11:22amThere was a body language expert on fox News this morning who was commenting on how cold the hug was. She said Palin should have been expecting it since he hugged everyone else down the line but she did not make eye contact and pulled her face away quickly.

The thing that always strikes me about McCain is how uncomfortable/frightened he looks. He always seems worried that someone is going to ask him a question that he doesn't like or doesn't have an easy answer for, or even just call him out on his bullsh*t.
I always remember that ugly little moment when a veteran called him out on his voting record on veterans' affairs, and McCain basically brushed him off with a "that's your version of my record" and moved on, he looked so desperately uncomfortable it was almost pathetic.

Posted: 9/4/08 at 12:52pmI noticed the hug also and it didn't look genuine at all. And on another note...the boyfriend of Palin's daughter looked like a deer in headlights. And actually...he is a deer in headlights.

ditto
they're little chemistry or shared warmth between McCain and Palin. There's is clearly a shotgun wedding as well.

I am not sure, but on the airport tarmac when the family arrived, he patted the dude on the back! Surreal.
