I'm sure his speech was moving, Blue, but I was so bored with what I DID hear that I muted the last 3 or 4 hours of it! I wish they would play "exit music" like on the Oscars when the person on stage drones on and on.

Grampy McSnooze!

Oh, and I swear, I have NEVER said a word to my kids about who I "liked" or "didn't like" for president. (For the record, son, 6: Hillary supporter; daughter, 12: Barack Obama supporter. But now they stand together behind Obama-Biden. Of course, my son likes Hillary because he thinks she looks like Barbie.)

penny, the only part that moved me was when he talked about his time as a POW. Nothing else resonated. I don't think he's a horrible person--I don't hate him the way I hate Bush--but he's terribly out of touch. I think he doesn't get it, and he didn't lay out any specifics about how he'd do anything differently. What kind of change are they talking about? We've had a Republican in charge for eight years. What exactly will change? And what if Palin DID have to assume leadership? Bye bye Supreme Court.

I liked Hillary for much the same reasons. I wanted her to get the nomination, and then to sing the dance remix of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" at New York Pride.

You know why my son is NOT sexist? Because he goes to school and proudly shares his love of Barbie with his classmates. Last year, he was a little nervous about it, but I told him, "It's okay to like Barbie." At first he didn't want to talk about it at school because the boys made fun of him, but then he started standing up for his rights. GENDER EQUALITY!!!!

He told me that one kid was teasing him when he told the class that his favorite thing to do after school was play with Barbies. "Then he wanted to sit with me during lunch, but I said, 'No! You made fun of me, so you're not my friend. Go find someone else to sit with!'" (BTW, all the girls LOOOVVVE my son. Seriously. Three of them told me and my husband that they were "in love" with him and were going to marry him. So, Barbie is a powerful political device...and a babe-catcher! Don't let it fool you!)

I'm sorry. Did I just threadjack? How rude. Here I am discussing a molded plastic doll and a six-year-old's fascination with it rather than the relevant and critical issues John McComa focused on in his address to the nation this evening. I seem to have wandered off into oblivion, inspired by the one candidate certain to reduce America's dependence on Ambien.

MP we want to raise our kids exactly the same way! we mentioned it to my sister-in-law once and she was like "you'll let your son play with a doll if he wants??? uh... that kid should play sports!!" she was furious.

i asked her what the big deal was? she screamed "thats gay!!!" i was like... uh... are you ****ing kidding me? i disagree 100%... and even if it was "gay", then so what?

my reasoning... if i love my son or daughter with all my heart no matter if they're gay, straight, whatever... why the hell do i care what they play with?

anyhow... now i threadjacked!

You see! John McNaptime is so dull that we're not even talking about HIM anymore! (At least Sarah Palin had that "Fargo" quality that made her kinda fun.)

I don't get why people discuss the sexual orientation of children anyway! It's sick!

I mean, my son is in first grade, for godssake! Why does ANYONE care if he's gay, straight or attracted to small barnyard animals? Why don't you pay attention to what's going on in your OWN family, with you OWN 17-year-old, extremely heterosexual daughter and leave my kids the hell alone!!!! Ya know????

"I don't think he's a horrible person--I don't hate him the way I hate Bush--but he's terribly out of touch."

I'm with you Blueroses. I could only stomach the first half-hour of the speech. The thing is that McCain rehearsed it for at least a month beforehand according to a McCain surrogate on Greta Van Susteren's show.

Wow, I wish my parents had been as open-minded when I was growing up as most of you. It's almost a miracle that I didn't turn out a misogynist & racist homophobe intolerant of any strain of religion other than evangelical Christianity.

"he seems hell bent on keeping the war going"

Um, you are aware that Obama has gone on record as supporting the continued effort in Afghanistan, right? And, that IS part of the 'war' you're speaking of, right? In fact, it's the part of the war that has seen increased expansion, of late.

And, the 'war' was funded well into the next presidential term - no matter WHO is elected - by the 'Democratic' congress.

I'd be VERY careful about pushing the war issue in this situation.

Re: Religion...Here is something I posted in another thread in July:

Keep in mind that my kids have had no formal religious education whatsoever.

For example, we drove by a church once and I asked my son if he knew who Jesus was and he said, "Yes. He wears a white dress and sandals. He has a mysterious hat that floats in the sky. And he can fly."

Tonight I asked him again who Jesus is and this is exactly what he said, "A long time ago, there were Chinese people on one team and Jesus on another. You know who won?"

"Who?" I asked.

"The Japanese" was his answer.

I have no idea why.

Miss Pennywise...your son kills me. And yes, it's OK to like Barbie, especially since we have a potential first lady who looks and dresses like her. Man, they are an odd couple.

I gave up on the speech at 10:45...enough literal finger pointing at people he's fake-recognizing and forced smiles. I don't hate him either, but I lost all respect for him when he chose Palin....not necessarily because of her, but because of his cowtowing to the Christian right in letting his own choices for VP be overruled.

Heard on the news this morning that Heart got their lawyers to contact the RNC because they did NOT giver permission for that song! (besides- that sends a terrible message to paint "sweet Hockey mom" as a barracuda!) I noticed the guy in the background yawning when McCain was giving his speech. I guess the security wasn't good either since a few protestors made it through! To me, the delivery of the speech was not very passionate (not on the calibre of Obama or Hillary). It was wierd how he would say something, pause, then give IMO a fakey smile. Even my daughter noticed that that was kinda wierd. I have never disliked McCain or dicredited his military service (I was raised by a career Navy father). I just absolutely LOATHE Sarah Palin. If he had chosen a different candidate- one with more national experience, it would have been a tougher decision for me. I absolutely hated the fact that her convention speech was filled with Obama attacks. Since she was new to the national scene, I felt like she should have focused more attention on her and her "qualifications". I think she believes she has to bulldoze her way into Washington and that will divide her party- not unite it! Just sayin'

Your son should teach history, Miss Penny.

He's got the bullet points down already!
