Just last week I emailed Mr. Hart, making inquiries about the rights to "The Wizard of Id;" I was planning to start work on a musical based on the comic strip. I got an email back from the syndicate indicating that "Mr. Hart has many other projects that he's currently working on, and is unable to give his attention to your project at this time."
I realize it was probably just a form letter, but it was weird to have him pass so suddenly after i had contacted him.

MisterRussell - there already exists a musical of "The Wizard of Id". I saw it at the University of Maryland in the mid 70's. My best friend from high school played the wizard.
Calvin - this article from today's Washington Post might have the answer to your question.

I loved his feminism, with such fantastic creations as The Fat Broad, etc., as well as his historical accuracy as pointed out by Calvin.

Ah Namo you forgot his legendary tolerance for others! Like any true man of God, he realized that there are many paths to the Lord and treated all other religions with Respect.
And of course, his grasp of natural history was legendary!

And then there was his famous "Homosexuality is the handiwork of Satan" comment.

Ah, but wonderwaiter, he repeatedly said that strip had nothing to do with Islam. Ignore the crescents and the "SLAM" written in the shape of an "I." Rather, it was a pointed joke about, uh, outhouses smelling bad. Because, you see, they do sometimes, with the lack of plumbing and...uh...yeah, that's the gag. Ha! Gag! It works on so many levels!
Still, it skeeves me out to speak completely ill of the dead, so I will say that if even Garry Trudeau defended him on occasion, there must have been something there.

And he didn't get all bogged down with, you know, words have meaning and all. Like how "comic" means "funny."

Posted: 4/10/07 at 11:10amI'm not defending him, becuase I don't agree with pretty much any of his point of views, and never found the strip (either of them) funny, but at least he was brave enough to make actual statements according to his beliefs through his art, and while I do not agree with it, I think that it is admirable.

Never fear! Bruce Tinsley is still around (if he can stay out of jail on drinking and driving charges, that is) to carry the conservative comic torch. Look at the funny way he draws noses!

Posted: 4/10/07 at 5:54pmCalvin, I loathe that comic. It's never, ever been even a little funny.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
