Wow, Elisabeth Moss is in this "Mad Men" sketch......she must have rushed over from the Barrymore.
John Slattery is in it too, yay.

My NBC channel died just as this skit started so I missed it. Can anyone tell me hat happened?

Jason Sudekis and Kristen Wiig played this obnoxious yuppie couple who come to Sterling Cooper for an ad campaign for this hula hoop with straps gizmo. Slattery and Moss played Roger and Peggy (and Hamm was Don Draper, of course), but they didn't have much to do. It was just........all right. Could have been better.

That's too bad. The station went out right after the woman who was supposed to be Joan came in.

"Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women" was funny! Good job.

I thought Jon was a great host. His James Mason impression was accurate and very funny!

I thought he was one of the best hosts in a while.

Yes, even though the material wasn't always the greatest, Hamm was a very good sport.

Good host, mediocre material and show as a whole.
Nothing caught fire in the first 40 minutes. The MAD MEN sketch was just strained and unfunny, and the presence of the real players only pointed up an uncomfortable gap between a send-up and the real deal. Poor Elizabeth Moss seemed unrecognized by the studio audience,no?
I think the Tina Fey stuff that's opened the show this fall is simply a hard act to follow; this start-up wasn't especially clever, and the Biden take-down, clearly offered in the name of fairness and balance, didn't have enough content to sustain the unweildly length. Let's face it, no matter what your affiliation, Biden isn't as funny, and the actor playing him isn't exactly spot-on.
Someone should write a Clooney-esque romantic comedy screen role for Hamm. He's got that Clooney-Cary Grant thing going.

Auggie27, I completely agree. I attended the show last night and I had no idea who that woman in the MAD MEN sketch was. I even sat behind the cast of MAD MEN and they didn't even applaud for her, haha.
The Biden sketch was ungodly long and just not that funny. They could have trimmed it down and just made his list of things that will happen to America more and more ridiculous.
John Hamm did a great job hosting. I just wish the material was better. Given his looks, I thought they could have done a Superman parody. He'd be a great Clark Kent!

I thought the same thing, Auggie! Shame. They seemed to recognize Slattery off the bat though, which was nice. There were touches only Mad Men viewers would get...like Pete's speech pattern, when Harry ran out of the room crying (like he did during Don's Kodak Carousel presentation during the S1 finale), etc. The guy playing Sal was ridiculous...I don't even know what that was about.

Why didn't we get a Hamm as Todd Palin sketch? Think of "Palins at Home" interview with someone. Tina's Sarah oppostie Hamm's Todd would've been a keeper, no?

Okay Wildhorn- I'm offically jealous! How did you get tickets to be in the audience? The only time I have been in that audience is when I went on an NBC tour a few years ago while I was visiting- ha! Anyway- I liked the Maya Rudolph/Michelle Obama sketch- "Solid- Solid as Barack" and Bill Clinton's "Don't You Forget About Me". I also thought that the host was extremely handsome! I haven't been able to watch Mad Men so I wasn't sure who he was. I'm glad he has gotten this good exposure though! Overall- a pretty lame show!

I thought the variety show skit was pretty cute. I laughed out loud at a few parts of it. Welcome back Maya!

The 'Don Draper Guide to Picking Up Women' was really the only skit I enjoyed last night.
Did anyone find it odd that Coldplay did three songs, plus a fourth as the show went off the air?

I thought Hamm's James Mason was the best bit, with his Guide to Picking Up Women also good. The rest of his material was kind of embarrassing. I was surprised that there was not more enthusiasm for the MAD MEN skit, and I loved that Moss and Slattery showed up.
I assume the Coldplay three/almost four songs was to fill in time for an additional skit that might have involved Amy, and couldn't be replaced in time.

I didn't find it odd at all, because it's exactly what U2 did the last time they were on. And Colplay is constitutionally incapable of doing anything U2 hasn't done before. Of course U2 got to play most of "I Will Follow" before the end of the credits, as opposed to hapless Coldplay. Not one note of song four! It did make SNL a faster view this morning, zipping through each song. I can't believe they are still wearing those asinine clothes. Did Coldplay's stylists decide the world needed another Dexy's Midnight Runners?
I too loved the variety show sketch and hope NBC has the good sense to pay Maya whatever she asks for to bring her back for the rest of the season. The annual Vincent Price sketch made me giggle, especially James Mason asking "Where are the whores?" and Liberace saying "I'm good." And though Price's "Leave that kind of talk to your bars without windows" line elicited not a single laugh in the audience, I LOLed at home.

wonkit, I think you're right. I had heard a Bronx Beat skit was planned, but with Amy not there I bet it was cut.

I too adored the Vincent Price sketch and was glad to see they brought it back after it got cut last year after dress. Kristen Wiig was hysterical as Gloria Swanson "Arrrrrr! I am a Pirate!"
I find Bill Hader's Vincent Price spot on. The sad point is, most of the people they impersonate in those sketches go right over the heads of their target audience.

No no no. The Coldplay four songs was definitely something that band would have demanded. There are always plenty of sketches to plug in.
