Nard and Josh, you are both correct. It was created with an apostrophe.
M_E, you jump in making pronouncements without having all the facts, as usual.
My username was created by Rob Diamond well over a year ago. He used the single apostrophe because not everyone is able to create an é, displaying an accent égue. While it might appear to be an affectation to you, M_E, it was simple matter of convenience to Rob in deference to members.
(Having used a typewriter keyboard to type my name of a few years before PCs became common usage, I can also attest to the fact that the ' was always used in place of and accent égue because that was not possible with a standard English typewriter keyboard.)

Nard, for the benefit of others, let's state M_E's intention here.
M_E, hopes that by purposely threadjacking this thread that you created about the way my username is typed, that he will annoy me by taking the attention away from me. His ultimate goal would be to become so pesky and annoying that it would cause me to delete this thread so that then she can cry "José is a meanie," or "censorship," or whatever else grabs his fancy.
The reality that poor M_E doesn't seem to grasp is his need for attention is far greater than anyone else's, and that his behaviour lately is convincing many more members of bww that this poor thing needs to be heavily sedated and placed back into solitary confinement.
