Kelis' new album is a masterpiece

What a great record!

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Hmm. I love her smoky voice and I like this song, but I really miss the dance sound of her last album. I think she found a perfect melding of her wonderfully raspy voice and that minimalist production there -- a pretty unique sound that I think she could have continued exploring.

Is this song representative of the whole album, Borstal?

I loved her last dance album too (and how it played, like classic disco albums, as a segued piece.) But it seemed to fail to make any real impact...

You mean outside of certain circles, right? I think it certainly made an impact with gay men. The Kelis/Robyn tour stop in LA was one of the gayest nights out I've ever had. Ha. I'll be shocked if this sound has more of an impact. It's nice. But, I dunno, a bit background'y, no? (Sorry, Borstal!)

Her last album was wonderful. Especially "4th of July." I had forgotten she had a new album out until this thread, so I'll have to check it out.

The track is pretty representative of her current sound. It's like cubist old school funk. How nice it is to hear horns in a song! My fave track is "Breakfast."

Yes, I saw the Robyn/Kelis tour as well and it was the gayest thing this side of Night of a 1000 Stevies.

I love that Kelis is constantly reinventing her sound as an artist but I can't say I'm feeling this album too much. Flesh Tone is pure brilliance to me and I think she found a good niche with the gay dance music. Perhaps this will grow on me the more I listen to it but I'm lukewarm on this effort.

It will get better with additional listens, trust me. Her sound has always been layered and rich, but here there's a new emphasis on her rough, beautiful voice. The lyrics are better here, too, and not as repetitive as the songs on Flesh Tone.

Oh, have you not seen her Cooking Channel show? It's like Cooking Channel's idea of a Bravo reality show. I am just not sure if she can cook but she is a pleasant enough person, which is perhaps all you need in that format.
