I was at the Union County Kerry-Edwards meet-up last evening, and learned the yard signs have been plucked at an alarming rate. Though the Today show and other news outlets are portraying the thefts as 50-50 for each party (which may be true on a nation'l scale) the Democratic ticket is the one being taken down at night here in northern NJ. In NJ, apparently there were too few printed up to begin with -- 3 months ago, we were deemed "solid blue" (now pale blue, and a bit nervous -- so they are precious and irreplacement. I have seen 2 disappear on my street. The good news: they are sending out a downloadable sign that comes in 4 parts. Scotch tape and anti-Bush mindset are all that's needed for an unlimited supply. In these waning days, there's comfort in bumper stickers, pins, and these signs. This feels like the end of a very difficult era, and though the next one will be a major challenge no matter who wins, there will be some relief in store once this bloody season is past us.

Really? I'll have to ask my NJ friends about that. But how stupid, really. Way to help your campaign, guys. Stealing signs is exactly how you win people's hearts and minds.

So here's my question...
do you REALLY think a sign in your yard will pull someone either way at this point?
Personally, I wear a Bush/Cheny pin on my collar, not to try to alter people's opinion, but to identify who I personally support.
I've said it before and it's more true now. The people who still identify themselves as "undecided" are just attention whores.
If the signs are so meaningless, why remove them?

I would say undecided voters either attention whores or incredibly uninformed. Because if you don't see differences between the two candidates or at least support neither, you really haven't been paying attention.
And jrb, people remove the signs because they're a visible symbol of the "enemy." And they're idiots.

Agreed!
Well spoken, Plum!
Thats like people on my campus tearing down over half of the 60 flyers put up about the Young Democrats's showing Fahrenheit 9/11. Stupidity and desperation.
If you're that threatened by signs expressing believes opposite to yours or other opponents, then maybe, just maybe you're not arriving at said beliefs or support for person in the right manner.
The same thing is happening here in the Poconos. One of my friends has a six foot sign that says "Vote Kerry" on one side and "Proud American" on the other. Some jerk spray painted the "Proud American" side but not the other side.
I've been noticing this as well. A lot of signs that I used to see have disappeared, and more and more Bush/Cheney signs are popping up. Disgraceful (the sign-taking, not the Bush signs).

One thing to bear in mind is the location of the signs.
Unless it's on your property, you have no reason to gripe if someone takes it down.
I had a spirited debate at the association meeting of the building I live in the other day. The short version is this: People from around a one or two block radius come to our building to vote. Now it's against the law to campaign within X feet of a polling place. SO if the lobby of your building is a polling place, it's illegal to have a campain sign in your window. Eventually, someone called the Board of Elections and they confirmed that it is in fact against the law. One person said to me "well you're just against it because I have a Kerry poster. If you had a Bush poster up, you would be pissed to." I responded "I don't have a Bush poster up in my window because I KNOW it's against the law"
Someone vandalized my neighbor's Kerry-Edwards sign and wrote "You're Stupid"
Now, that's just immature. It makes me question the intelligence of humans today.

I would not have done that (write you're stupid)
that's not right.
I didn't think you would

Of course, whoever wrote that on your sign wasn't making such a great case for their own intelligence.
I mean really, that's the best argument he or she could come up with? "You're stupid?"
I really want to kick something.
i didn't steal the signs, i just borrowed them for a political science project. i'll be sure that they are returned on nov. 3rd.
Something has been bothering me about this post.
Now, Augmeister, ya know I love you...but I keep thinking that the word should not be 'snitched' but, instead, 'snatched'.
Now...I know you're adverse to snatch in several areas of your life, but must you take it this far?
PS I realize snitched is right...I just wanted an excuse to write the word 'snatch' on this site.
robbie, that reminds me of an old george carlin routine defending the use of the "t" word as the only true scatalogical term for the female genitalia. he pointed out that most of the others could be used in one single sentence that could be uttered in a disney movie, "wwe're gonna snatch that p*ssy, but him hin a box and bring him on the airplane."
yer not laughing?
fine now imagine it with george carlin doing a mickey mouse voice?
still nothing?
oh, fine! choke on my f***ing c*ck!
*edit*
a**hole!!
