re: kerry's speech

"At first, he seemed quite thrown by it and unsure when to go on. But as he progressed, he learned how to ride it, when to pause, when to speak over it...it's a difficult thing to do."

Sounds like my trip to Montreal last week, but I digress.

I felt the speech was rather masterfully paced.

DGrant, I'm usually really cynical about **** like that too, but I was VERY impressed to hear Kerry invoke the movements of the '60s in a positive way. Let's face it, and papa you have to back me up on this one, the Republicans have managed over the last 25 years to completely belittle the '60s movements, particularly the peace and women's movements. And to make the '60s sound like an irrelevant decade when in fact they did change the world. So it did my heart good to hear that,.

re: kerry's speech

Namo - no one would be happier than I if the foundational message of the 60's could get some airplay. I just wish it wasn't coming out of the mouth of an escapee from the Disney 'Hall of Presidential Wannabees' - this man gives animatronics a bad name.

re: kerry's speech

namo, you say belittle like it's a bad thing.

but i will agree that both he and theresa were proudly adamant about being creatures of the 60's and all that entailed. he did after all spend almost 120 days in vietnam. re: kerry's speech

i don't think it's just the gop that's guilty of trying to marginalize the 60's though, namo. i think that both parties, the gop more so of course, have had no idea to touch the 60's. because of the deep divisions in the country at that time (kinda like now) it was deemed for the most part better to avoid talking about it rather than spend much time bringing it up for fear of offending anyone. remember, 2.59 million people served in vietnam and not all of them hated it as much as john kerry. the fact that a goodlysome amount of them have gone on to have kids since who are around my age now, some of whom are just as loony as me makes it a dangerous gamble. but, yeah, we still are pissed off about the 60's.

re: kerry's speech

Papa - the only reason most liberal politicians won't embrace the 60's is the same reason they really don't say anything about anything - it would involve committing to taking a stand - in public. Those that do are completely marginalized themselves.

re: kerry's speech

I thought his speech was hope inspiring....at least its a far cry from what we are getting now from W.

I wonder how many here were even around in the 60's. Does anyone remember Walter Cronkite on the CBS in the evening giving the body count for the day. I do and I dont really wan to go thru it again...but alas, here we are..counting bodies for a war that now is being said as OOPS!! sorry!

I'd like a stand on ceremony, please. A hand-stand would be okay, too - but only if it involves simultaneous splits.

re: kerry's speech

I would also like to take a stand and applaud the brave men and women from Asia who give me my machomanicures WITHOUT wearing dust masks. I mean, are they CRAZY or something.

Papa, I would also like to take on Adam and the Ants's "Stand & Deliver" please.

Bobby, go look at the 'can the adults please smoke' thread, and make note of the posters involved. They're the ones whose vantage point you may share.

re: kerry's speech

I just have to ask: how old are you? I honestly see no understanding of history, of the evolution of political platforms or parties. I see no grasp of anything other than the dreaded team mentality...

I've recently turned 26, Namo. I didn't have the pleasure to live through the 60s and 70s. I have almost none of the wealth of life experiences that some of my favorite posters here can draw from.

I'm really confused though, because at one point, you mocked me for not sticking to "my" side of an issue. You continually accuse me of being a Rush supporter, when I have repeatedly said that I think is is a blowhard of epic proportions.

I, sadly exist just slightly to the right of center. So for people who are polarized to one extreme side or another of an issue, I must be a real pain, because I like to evaluate both sides... sometimes I comment from either perspective.

The comment that you are punishing me for was an good natured joke against the GOP... a bit of "self"-effacing humor.

G'Head. Enjoy the next couple minutes of your life that you waste tearing into me.

re: kerry's speech

Your martyr stance not withstanding, I honestly must have missed all of the threads in which you "have repeatedly said that I think [Rush] is a blowhard of epic proportions." I only recall the original post in which you said he "may" lack credibility "now." I know I have poked fun at you for that stance, and you replied to that issue once. I must have missed all the others.
