I'm pretty impressed. I mean, I wasn't planning to vote for Bush anyway, but I'm glad to know now that the other choice is indeed a good one.

God, I wish I could believe that he'd be able to come through with 50% of what he said. I'd vote for him.
The problem with speeches like this one, is that they are written to be "exactly what you want to hear." "Yes, you" "The one at the keyboard" "What do you want to hear?" "Well, I'll tell you..."
I'm afraid that politics are becoming bland. Democrats are pretending to be moderate Republicans, and Republicans are pretending to be, uh... moderate Republicans...
It was an OK speech. His delivery needs some work. He's the only one worse at managing applause than W., many of his entries were terribly awkward. Just as many flubs as W. too, of course we won't hear about them tomorrow. It'll be all rainbows and tulips.
Good speech, so-so delivery, empty promises.

But at least he brings with him a sense of hope. Bush brings nothing but bigotry and lies.

I'd love an honest head-to-head comparison of the text of the two speeches, after the fact. Read Bush's speech, read Kerry's speech without seeing the delivery, and we'll truly see if hope only comes from one side of the aisle.

Hey Ckeaton, I feel almost as you do about Reps and Dems...except I think Dems are becoming Moderate Republicans and Republicans are starting to line up somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan and Jerry Falwell.

I found it dull. i hate to be negitive, and you all know that i never am, but the fact that he was in nam really doesn't mean anything to me. He just says it does so everyone cheers. And then busting out the 911 reference? what the freaking heck? That was total fluff.
As far as the delivery goes, im sure any of us actors could have done better...

for the first half I was convinced he was doing an incredible job. then i flipped to c-span, which was playing footage from past democratic conventions and they had Clinton sexily crooning his 1996 convention speech. it was then that i realized how ridiculously low the bar has fallen with our current pres. love him or hate him, Bush is an abominable public speaker. compared to what spews out of his mouth the dull Kerry speech today seemed like brilliance. but Clinton, THERE was a great speaker!

While not a joyous Kerry fan, I was impressed, I actually found last night the most digestable of the convention, but Rev. Al goes down as my favorite, he at least had unscripted passion.

I honestly see no understanding of history, of the evolution of political platforms or parties. I see no grasp of anything other than the dreaded team mentality, the sports metaphor, that infuses and dumbs down every single aspect of American life. Us versus Them. We're Number One! In Your Face, Losers.
The overarching metaphor that I heard during the DNC and which actually gave me hope, and yes, I still believe in a town called hope, is a challenge to stop thinking that way. To stop talking about sides of the aisle and red and blue states.

now, namo, just because the national socialist, uh, i mean democratic party was able to schedule a line-up of speakers that was able for 4 days to avoid screaming "bush is a nazi fascist mass murderer whose daughters use roofies on unsuspecting farm animals" doesn't mean that such positivity can hold up for 3 months. plus it's fine to be positive when you've got george soros and steve "the godfather" bing shelling out 6 figure checks for hate speech.
let's see what the bounce is next week and further into the month and after the gop convention. if the dems get ahead and stay ahead, there's a good chance that the moonbats will be kept at bay (and from baying) and the party of lenin will have a shot at the brass ring. however, if they lose the convention bounce before the gop even gets to nyc or if they find themselves down in sept/oct i suspect that the howling will get louder and less coherent and more importantly, less controlled and coordinated. but hey, that's just me.
for the record, the speech said one thing to me. it confirmed my fear that jfk2 will sit back and wait until attacked to make a move on terror as opposed to proactively pursuing the war on terror. which plays into the fear that i've had all along that i voiced back in january: the kerry administration gets into office and rols back the patriot act, engages the world, signs every treaty imaginable (thus effectively tying the us' hands in foreign affairs) and then is hit with a catastrophic attack. once attacked, the admin feeling that it must react strongly (and really pissed off that anyone would dare attack his administration) would lash out trying to send a message showing how vicious the response to terror will be while avoiding any us casualties, hence foreign policy by cruise missile (and that worked so well between '92 and '00 at preventing and disrupting the genesis of al qaeda). but hey, if you've got a problem, by god the johnnies are gonna fix it!

I was impressed with Kerry's speech. For the first time in this campaign he put some passion behind his words. I felt the first half hour or so was the typical Kerry "I'm a war hero" stuff that is getting old. I was glad to see him move from that and become strong, impassioned and forceful in his the remainder of his speech. This is what he has been lacking thus far. My concern is that the Rep spin on the speech will be that the strength and passion were put on to counter the robotic, unemotional Kerry that we have seen up until now.
I'm hoping that he will continue at this level for the remainder of the campaign. He also needs to start being more specific as to how he plans to accomplish the things he is promising.

From the moment Kerry started with that ridiculous salute and message, I had to supress a gag reflex. Trumped up honors, 1/3 of a duty tour and some re-enacted skirmish footage with yourself re-cast as the hero do not make a good foundation from which to trumpet your veteran stature. He simply fell into line with the whole rest of this charade - nothing more than vacuous pandering.
