At least that's what the video's billed as.

I was disappointed. I thought he was going to rap.

He's actually right though. He may not have gone about it the right way, but he's right. She's getting paid a salary to sit at her desk and hand out packets that she took 15 minutes to Xerox? Granted we are only hearing his side of the story and I will concede that. But I taught HS, and there are WAAAAAY to many teachers who fall into this rut. The kids want you to get up in front of the class and engage with them. And have discussions.

I have had some teachers I would have LOVED to do this to in the past. But, StockardFan is right, we don't know her side. But I was like him not to long ago and I see where he is coming from.

True, have not heard teacher's side. The story made the local news there after going viral, and the student was interviewed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKjqjpePhTc

Highlights:
He didn't know another student was filming, but he isn't embarrassed about it.
He has not been reprimanded.
The principal is going to meet with him.
His mom is a teacher.
He dropped out of school for a year (I think), which taught him the value of education.

Looking back at my high school days, this makes me more appreciative of the teachers I had. It was a rural public school in the middle of nowhere that I attended from 1st through 12th grade (no K when I started there in the 60s), but I have to say the teachers genuinely cared about the students. Some English and history teachers I had in high school especially stand out in my mind, but overall I don't recall ever having a teacher that just handed out material and sat at his or her desk during class.

And I still think most teachers care for their students JbaraFan1, but, you always get that one teacher. I would say out of my years of schooling, 90% truly cared and I had a bunch of teachers.

We now know about the student, but I am interested in learning about the teacher and what other people think.

My first impluse when I was watching the first couple seconds was "wow, what an a**hole", but by the end the kid kinda won me over. I definitely am interested in hearing the teacher's side of the story, but the kid came off as an intelligent one who was pissed about his teacher's seemingly apathetical attitude, and not simply one of those jerk students who just try and get a rise out of teachers. I think he was a little misguided in his approach, though.

I can empathize with him. I remember 2 teachers in middle school who pretty much did what he described - they just handed out worksheets each class period with little explanation and spent most of the rest of the time at their desk.

My brother was in an "LD" class when he was in high school, without any proper diagnosis. He was often in trouble. He hated school for the most part, but he was really trying to get on track. One day in class, he didn't understand something and asked the kid beside him. (This time, it was a legit reason, but he'd gotten in trouble for talking in class before. He was just honestly trying to put forth effort this time.) The teacher decided to write him up. He begged her not to because he had so many points from minor infractions that another write up meant an automatic suspension. She said, "I really don't care. I get paid whether you are here or not." When my parents met with the school, she didn't deny saying it. It sounds like the teacher in this video had the same attitude. He said she mentioned that this was her paycheck.

For some teachers it is just a paycheck. I will never forget the ones I had like that. It makes the real teacher all the more important.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I think at any school you get a mix of inspiring teachers, those who seem to be trying as they go, those who are genuinely burnt out, and those who are just inept. Iwas lucky for most of my schooling because I did french immersion which here in Canada tends to get the teachers who genuinely are interested in teaching, though for my last two years of high school I dropped out of it to go to a theatre based school. There--again I was lucky because I managed to get into honours programs, except for math. I suck at math--and I had an awful teacher for math, who didn't help the situation. I squeaked by,but I admit with a lot of regret that the class was a mess, and I helped play a part, in that none of us would even pay attention to the teacher--and he seemed oblivious to it; just trying to get through each day.

That said, our teacher would sorta blow up (I'd place him in the burnt out category,) I remember one time I gave a classmate a pencil midway through a test after he had *asked* the teacher if he could get one, and was shut down before he even could finish what he was saying--I was suspended but a teacher who i had in my corner turned that around.

I'm the teacher in that video is bound by core curriculum and teaching to a test. Teachers aren't allowed to teach anymore. Everything is about testing testing testing. Thanks to education "reform".

Sadly I believe this a trend in public education. I had a few teachers in my high school that were like this, except they threw some slide shows up instead and sat at their desks and remotely changed the slides and we just had to jot down notes. One teacher actually had us copy her entire slides verbatim and when we got the test (which had material on it that delved deeper then just the notes she gave us)many of us failed, and she could not understand how that could happen.

Interesting follow up - the teacher has been put on leave and an investigation is being started.
