My brother got me a Netflix subscription for Christmas which I JUST got around to redeeming.
First on my list was Kill Bill (Vol.1 and 2).
First of all, what an exceedingly violent film (including the more talky and exposition filled but still violent vol. 2).
Secondly, I can only guess that the violence kept this film off the radar for most awards ceremonies because I have not seen a more innovative (while paying homage to all those silly old Chinese action flicks and even spaghetti westerns) film and one better directed in a few years.
And Uma, Uma, Uma...totally shocked to see less recognition of her very well-acted performance as the Bride. It's not completely unprecedented for this type of role to get nominated (Sigourney Weaver in Alien, anyone?) but I suppose this has been a fantastic year for women's roles and she was just left out of the mix.
There's a little statue in her future with the right role, though.
So, thoughts on the film? Would it make a good musical? :)
I adore this movie as a whole. It is violent, beautiful, and emotional. It will be a classic, no matter what.
It's funny that you mention a musical. In September, I had a dream that I was watching "Kill Bill: The Musical". I go to this board the following day, and realize that someone else had the exact same dream. Wierd, huh?
Hehe. Not so much a dream as a joke, 86. I think it would be a horrible musical. :)
And I have to say, in a film filled with amazing fights, the best has to be the penultimate fight with the Bride and Elle Driver (with Darryl Hannah giving her best performance in decades!).
Yeah, it wouldn't work, would it? However, I dreamed that the House of Blue Leaves fight was set to "Zoot Suit Riot". It was awesome!
I agree that the best fight is the one with Elle. In "Vol. 2", Daryl Hannah and David Carradine are sterling examples of what can be done with small roles.
Agreed totally. Darryl especially shows how good she is at playing a hard a$$. MOre of this from her is forthcoming, I hope!
My favorite Tarantino film and on my top faves of all time!
I heart Tarantino.
He always gets the best performances out of his actors. The Kill Bills were amazing, but I still think nothing compares with Pulp Fiction (my all time favorite movie).
I think real props ought to be extended to Tarantino for taking forgotten actors and turning them into bona-fide Ack-tahs.
Pulp did it with Travolta (and made a name of a few other actors besides) and Kill Bill certainly did it with Hannah and Carradine for me.
I adore both movies. Some of Tarantino's best work and a fitting tribute to the old time Chinese martial arts films!
My favorite part is the part where she cuts off all the people's feet...that was classic.
"They belong to me now"...that cracks me up every time.
I didnt see KB 1 or 2 until recently, but I love both of them!

The second movie was far, far, better than the first, which I found to be a shallow, meaningless gore-fest, but paradoxically, Volume 2 needed the context of the first to be great.
And I'll never forget the sick humor of Elle losing her other eye.

I love both movies. They are two of my all time favorite movies. As always, Tarantino is a genious at not only directing, but writing such brilliant dialogue. I love the speach about the superheros at the end of volume 2.
bwayboy~ i agree about the speech at the end. Tarantino is a genius
btw, i really like ur icon! oh, michael! LOl

Jwei, let's not turn this into a thread about Mikey.
*sigh*
oh, Mikey...
Wait a minute. NO! Back to Kill Bill.
K1 was 3 hrs of my life I will never get back.
K2 was considerably better but still not just what i would have wanted.
sabrelady-
Out of curiousity, what more could you have possibly wanted from "Kill Bill"? I'm not trying to be rude, I just want to know.
Too formula- Yes I know some call it "hommage" other call it ripping a genre. I anticipated EVERY shot Quentin did- I was practically shouting "JUST DO THE CHERRIES IN THE SNOW SHOT ALREADY" w the big sword fight. and the anime - ye gawds & little mercies! & yes I know WHY they did the whistling thing but I hated it- made my neck itchy!
KB2 I still figured a lot out but found the use of B&W ameliorated the more annoying aspects. My only comfort was Elle- and the "?' I can hope....
and when I say shot- I mean SHOT- POV, turnarounds, over the shoulders etc not just where the story was headed.
