tepid......I never decide if I liked her in this....don't think I did, rather than timid, I found the character cutesy....which I don't like.......

Not. She never found the character. Every thing she did was by technique.

What a shame.
I've still not seen it but sounds like a match made in heaven.

A surprising misfire. She never inhabits the character. But then I found the whole production full of odd choices.

I think Kristin did a better job than Matthew Broderick.

I am going to say warm.

I'll say warm too. Not great, but not godawful either.

They put her in one of the most disfiguring wigs ever--honestly, it looked like a Victorian lampshade, and then directed her to play the part prune-faced and crabby. She did the best she could in a misconceived project.

Yes, Broderick looked like a sheepish little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Terrible miscasting. Kevin Kline would have been great.

I thought Kristin was pretty good - she would have been better if she wasn't partnered with Broderick's "Music Nerd". He was horrible.

Well, her singing was great!!!!!! It looked like all the little cute things that she did with Sally Brown, Lily St.Regis, and Galinda were coming through to Marion. I guess it did give some new life to the part.

Here's the honest truth, when I saw it on TV in it's original viewing, I remember I just thought she was so-so. After that, I bought the DVD. After that, I found out who she was, and got cast recording with her in them and loved her. Then when I watched the DVD(for the first time!!!!!!) in March 2005, I LOVED her in the role.

GO Figure!!!!!!

I actually liked Matthew better than her. I'll say she was warm, warm-ish.

Singing is hot. Acting is lukewarm, mostly because it was horribly directed.

the whole movie was ghastly compared to the robert preston version

"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous

Sorry, she blew The Music Man.
She can't hold a candle to Shirley Jones.

I just like that I was able to buy a musical dvd with her in the lead. She sings beautifully but I just don't like the whole movie overall. I love her, though. She's precious!

I agree... the actual movie isn't that impressive to watch. Nevertheless, I like Cheno's singing in the movie.
