Kris Jenner as Lady Thiang (OR, The 2015 Met Ball)

We should probably be talking about the Met Ball, right? The NY Times has what seems like an endless scroll of photos from tonight's event. I was genuinely looking forward to checking it out, but I have to say it's a bit disappointing thus far. This should be an occasion for some glamorous (and almost-glamorous) stars to go wild and be bold, but I'm seeing a whole lotta perfectly nice dresses that wouldn't be out of place at The Emmy Awards. I'm guessing that the night's theme is the issue:

FROM RACKED: The spring 2015 Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is dedicated to Chinese fashion, and that's the theme for this year's gala. The exhibit is called "China: Through the Looking Glass," and it showcases Chinese art and rare artifacts as well as dresses interpreting Chinese designs from Western designers like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Tom Ford. The gala can be notoriously tricky to dress for, but fears about cultural appropriation are running high for this particular event.

In an age in which, for many people, it's still acceptable for lily white blonde girls to be wearing full Native American headdresses to Coachella, I appreciate the sensitivity around cultural appropriation. But this is the Met Ball. This is an excuse to wear something unusual and even costumey and if one is working with a truly great fashion designer s/he can use the influence of Chinese design and culture without outright aping it or making you look like a waitress at the Mandarin Garden Restaurant:

I know, right? Hathaway is just... perfect, really. The cut of that hood is just exquisite. It manages to feel retro (as in a few centuries ago retro) and futuristic at once.

Anne Hathaway looks ridiculous, wrong country sweets.

Kris got in because two of her spawn were there, she looks deeply stupid as does her naked daughter.

Love Gong Li and Sarah Jessica's looks.

Um, no, I'm not "nuts" for thinking her dress is stunning. Thanks though!

I understand people wanting to be sensitive to this year's theme, but the whole white people safe choice of RED dresses is pretty funny.

Beyonce looks like a stripper from Newark.

Helen Mirren is a cut above.

Yes, shame on Gaga and Lily and Jennifer Lawrence and the Olsen Twins and Anne Hathaway for wearing red. Hey Miguel, what's up with that outfit, dude. You trying to be white or something? *smh*

Kris Jenner is a vile, vulgar woman (and that's being kind).

Beyoncé and JLo both looked like hookers.

I take back what I said about JLo. The NYTimes had a much better and more flattering picture of her gown, than the one I saw on another site.
