LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE

I agree, and for me, it was sheer, unbridled laughter with tears running down my face.
I don't think I want to see the movie again. It was such a perfect experience, and you only get one first time.

I took refuge in a theater showing this during a particularly miserable afternoon and I could not agree more, Sueleen.
Of all the dysfunctional family black comedies that have been coming out as of late, this one is definitely the best one since THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS. And that, my friends, is one hell of a thing to be.

Posted: 8/19/06 at 8:23pmMiss Colette is again, perfection. In the same week seeing her in this, and then in THE NIGHT LISTENER, in which she IS them movie, I believe she is the most valuable player out there. (Remember how she damn near walked away with a chunk of THE HOURS?)

THE HOURS is that movie that I keep telling myself that I need to see and yet somehow keep forgetting about it.
For me, the best performance in the film was given by Steve Carell. Easily his best performance to date. The first scene we see him, he has a facial expression on his face that says all you really need to know about that character. It's the most subtle piece of film acting since the two minutes in THE CONSTANT GARDENER where the camera just stays on Ralph Fiennes as he hears about his wife's death. To say that an Oscar is in that man's future would NOT be foolhardy.

Posted: 8/20/06 at 8:50pmHadn't read anything related to this movie prior to seeing it today. I don't remember the last time I laughed so much at a movie. The beauty pageant number was priceless!

I thought this movie was just brilliant. Like bdwaygirl said, I don't remember the last time I laughed that hard at a movie. The comedy was all there. Steve Carell never ceases to make me laugh.

Posted: 8/21/06 at 3:28pmI just saw the movie and really enjoyed it. I was OK with it until the beauty pageant scene -- it seemed somewhat formulaic until then, though the acting was great across the board (Steve Carrell - just wow -- where was he HIDING before the last few years???). I saw the movie in a relatively empty theater since it was early afternoon, but even the few of us there just burst out laughing at the beauty pageant scene -- I would easily rank that as one of the great end scenes in film history - and that's NOT something I would say lightly.

Replace "The Royal Tenenbaums" with "The Ref" and I would agree. I hated The Royal Tenenbaums. A truly eccentric family doesn't need to tell everyone how eccentric they are. It was just too deliberate and pretentious (though not as pretentious and dull as The Squid and the Whale). What makes a good dysfunctional family comedy work is when the family is utterly convincing and believable, which was never the case with the Tenenbaums.

I agree with you Mister Matt about The Royal Tenenbaums and The Ref (though I loved The Squid and the Whale).
I had another friend favorably compare Little Miss Sunshine to The Royal Tenenbaums last week. I just couldn't get into that one, but loved Little Miss Sunshine.

I saw this today with my grandma. I thought it was absolutely wonderful! Olive's dad reminded me of Logainne's dads in Spelling Bee.
Steve Carell did a fabulous job, as did the guy who played Dwayne.

Posted: 8/22/06 at 5:07pmI have nothing new to say, but it was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. The entire cast is fantastic, and nobody steals the thunder. Steve Carrell's versatility was SO impressive, but I kept thinking back to Paul Dano. Tehy were all great. Some lovely film shots and a wonderful script. SEE. IT.
