LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
re: LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE#25
Posted: 8/8/06 at 8:05amI went yesterday and loved it. Toni Collette's facial expressions were worth the price of admission alone. There's nary a weak link in the ensemble. Sharp, clever writing and terrific direction. A must see.

alan arkin is oscar worthy in his role.
ps. there are no naked children in the film.

Posted: 8/8/06 at 10:29amI loved this movie. The little girl (name escapes me) was great. Toni Collette was brilliant as always. The whole cast was quite inspired actually.

Terrific movie! I predict several Oscar noms including Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Actress (Collette), Supporting Actor (Carell), and possibly Supporting Actress (Breslin).
I loved everything about this movie. The family was odd and quirky without being too over the top (though Kinnear pushed the edge of believability at times). And despite their shortcomings, you can't help but root for them in the end and join in the celebration of their support for each other, their individuality, and their love. Out of the depths of depair, there can be joy, be it great or small. What a conderful film. Definitely the front-runner for Best Picture so far this year.

Posted: 8/8/06 at 11:52amThis really has been quite the decade for quirky family dramas. I can't wait for this movie.

Posted: 8/8/06 at 12:01pmAs much as I liked this film I really doubt it will get a Best Picture nom or one for the screenplay. It is a bit too cliché and formulaic. I can see a couple of acting nominations, though.

My local movie theatre promoted this movie so much, and it turns out we aren't even getting it.
LAME.

Posted: 8/14/06 at 3:12pmI saw this over the weekend. As I didn't want to know anything about it before I went in, I was pleasantly surprised. The little girl in the movie is absolutely precious.

Sueleen, I think your Grapes of Wrath analogy is insightful and apt. Very good call.
I can't overstress the importance of seeing Little Miss Sunshine in a crowded theater. The catharsis that comes with sharing that much laughter communally is something that the DVD experience will not be able to offer.
I loved Little Miss Sunshine. It had nothing new to say but found new ways to say it. No comic stone is left unturned, and even things that you think you've seen before have little tweaks that make them not quite what you expect to see. There's suprise after surprise. And the ending had me laughing so hard there were tears streaking down my face.
It's excellent.

There is even a nod to the great dysfunctional family road picture National Lampoon's Vacation that, when it happens, seems both nostalgic and new at the same time.
I defy anyone to keep their mouth shut when witnessing the beauty contest. It's impossible. It's jaw-dropping shock followed by out-loud guffaws of laughter. The audience was literally roaring.

Posted: 8/14/06 at 5:41pmThe little girl is Abagail Breslin. She made her debut as Mel Gibson's daughter in "Signs" and was also in the Kate Hudson movie "Raising Helen" with her brother Spencer Breslin (Star of Disney's "The Kid", among others).

Posted: 8/18/06 at 9:51pmJust saw Little Miss Sunshine today and loved it! Have not enjoyed a movie so much in a long time. Everyone in the theater was laughing till they cried but I also found it very heart warming. We all have crazy characters in our families that fit the disfunctional mode. I could relate to much of the family's craziness as part of a large "normal" family myself! Loved it.

SEMI-SPOILERS...........
I was thinking about this film today and realized there is one of those moments, right before Olive takes the stage, that I just didn't know what was going to happen. That may seem like an obvious statement, but I mean that seriously. Films are so predictable today that it is a rare treat when a filmmaker doesn't tip his or her hand before the big climax and the audience thinks this really could go in any direction. You think it is a fairly predictable film, but at that moment when you realize you have never seen ANY of her act that it could just go either way...It is a real treat.
The last time I really remember feeling that way with a film was Chuck and Buck.
