I finally got to see it on dvd last weekend. I think i know what you eman about structure, Sueleen. There were some points where i got lost in the film, story and incredible performances and had to back up to check at period and what place in Piaf's life the current scene was being done. Overall, it was a fantastic movie.
I knew something about Piaf's life prior to seeing the film and had heard her music and wonderfully expressive voice, but I was surpised at how much I didn't know about the woman behind it all.
Cotillard's performance was perfect. Not only did she get the singing voice down, including that feeling that everything Piaf lived through came out in her voice, but she gave such depth to the role. I was amazed at how she managed to capture and balance the insecurities, the bravado, the joys and tragedies and the live fast and die young attitude that Piaf seemed to embody.
"She (Piaf) makes Judy Garland's life look absolutlely heavenly by comparison"
I saw this flick shortly after my earlier post. It was my personal favorite last year. My senses were probably heightened because my retention of the French language is now nearly abysmal. Like all great screen actors, Cotillard speaks with her eyes and full compass of gestures. Her performance transcends any language barrier.

Did she do her own singing? I thought I understood she didn't.
She didn't sing. She lipsynced to real Piaf recordings.
Giggle giggle. The sock puppet thought Cotillard was really singing.
Giggle giggle.
Marion actually was lip-synching to the singing of Jil Aigrot.
Lip-synching or not, Marion is phenomenal.

I thought she was singing and not lipsyncing to Piaf recordings because some of it didn't sound exactly like Piaf...very close, but something was a bit different.
Yeah, Pal joey, I made a mistake. Thank god I'm perfect in every other way so it's forgivavble.
I watched Away From Her last weekend and was astonished by Julie Christie's performance. I thought it was a shoo-in for Best Actress. Tonight I saw La Vie En Rose (thanks, Netflix Instant View!), and while I agree with comments above re structure, Cotillard's performance absolutely blew me away. It's a much more showy performance than Christie's naturally, but there are so many sequences where Cotillard's face and physicality just amazed me, and it all felt so visceral. It really is a horserace come Oscar night. It will be interesting to see which way the Academy will go tomorrow night, but either way, both are both strongly memorable performances.
It has been a while since there was a tie, and this is one year that I think it would be appropriate.
I just watched it (like, tonight) and loved it! It was gorgeously filmed, and Cotillard definitely deserves an Oscar for her performance.
Absolutely, without a doubt, Marion C deserves Best Actress. Will she get it, is another story.
Julie C seems to be the darling, winning the majority of the Best Actress awards this year. So, we'll see.
Would be very sentimental if she does win, coming full circle having previously won Best Actress over 40 years ago.
But, they could cancel eachother out? Who knows what will happen.
A tie would be excellent.
Wouldn't that be something!!! I think the only time that happened was in 1969 when Barbra Streisand & Katherine Hepburn tied for Best Actress. I don't think it's ever happened before that. I know it hasn't happened since.
And with nearly 6,000 voting members, the likelihood of it happening again are slim.
Exactly....slim to none. But, it happened once. I'm sure back in 1969 the members wouldn't have imagined that a tie would ever happen.
"Julie C seems to be the darling"
Was that intentional?
