Take heed, youngsters--this lady will work FOREVER. She happily takes lead, character, supporting, and cameo parts with equal ease; she doesn't make a pain of herself, so everyone wants to work with her; and she has no ego. She'll be around long after the Jessicas and Britneys of our time have flared out. Of course, she must also have phenomenal luck--she seems to do only the projects she wants to do, and she always does them well. I can't recall a single bad performance (even in dreck like CONGO.)
I honestly cannot think of another working actor today of whom I cannot honestly say that I've never seen give a bad performance, regardless of the quality of the film or stage production. She's a marvel.
I think Kate Winslet is the only other major film actress of her generation that matches her in terms of quality, talent, charm, beauty, and star wattage.
What Linney does that reminds me of Streep is her ability to do funny films like THE NANNY DIARIES, take supporting roles like she did in KINSEY, do a TV guest-starring role, and carry an intensely dramatic movie with the same ease and talent. I truly admire that.
She is also committed to her stage career which is quite exciting.
Donna Murphy mentions in an interview that she has been friends with Linney for a while, and that the scene they shared in NANNY DIARIES is what she calls "the no-acting needed" scene. How cute.

I agree - but I'd add Cate Blanchett, as well - for all the same reasons, up-to-and-including her dedication to the stage.
Very dynamic women, all - and exciting to watch.
Linney is a good working actress, but does not have the star quality of someone like Winslet, who fairly leaps off the screen.
I don't agree. Winslet has the tendency to get overly "actressy" in the wrong role. Linney makes everything seem like a perfect fit.
And I respectfully disagree with that. I found Linney way too uptight in You Can Always Count on Me, a film I otherwise loved, with great performances by the rest of the cast.
We'll agree to disagree then. I need to revisit that film, too. Thanks for reminding me.
It's one of my favorites.
She went to the same high school as me--granted many years before me but she lived in the same dorm as me. She is without a doubt one of my favorite actresses out there today.LOVED her in NANNY DIARIES.

You'll have a hard time finding many people who agree with that statement.
On this board perhaps, but in the rest of the world, you'd be hard-pressed to find half as many people who would remember Linney from the screen as opposed to Winslet.

Too bad Winslet is too old to play Galinda!
I don't equate "star quality" with "level of celebrity."
It's not about celebrity. That's why I said "from the screen", not "from the tabloids".
I agree with that. It's almost like Linney is too good. She almost fades into a character. I have caught myself thinking, "Oh yeah, she was in that," in response to several roles. I liked her in the Tales movies, but it was one of the cases where I loved the books so very much that the movies failed in comparison. She does have dimples you could swim in, though.

You can't find her in most of her characters, that's what's so astonishing.
I don't know if I agree that Kate Winslet has the tendency to act too "actressy" in the wrong role, although I'd love to hear an example.

I agree with the last few posts. Linney is not one I would necessarily call a character actress, but one of those spectacular actors where you find that you know her face but you're not quite sure why. She commands the screen when necessary, and supports when necessary. She's solid but unassuming and always provides a great performance.
I saw The Savages today and thought Linney gave a great performance (as did Philip Seymour Hoffman- as always). The story didn't particularly move me and the characters were not particularly likeable, but were well-acted.
She does need an Oscar!!! (Ditto to Kate Winslet and Julianne Moore.)

I'm in love with that movie. It captures the family dynamic like I've never seen. She and Philip were flawless.

It was so depressing! Except for the dog. haha. :o)
I just saw THE SAVAGES again tonight. God what brilliance!
Linney is just magnificent. I love that she can go from hilarious to irritating to heart-breaking so seamlessly in the same film.
Hoffman was as good as it gets and Philip Bosco deserves an Oscar nomination for this role. His looks were so sad.
I wish the studio had pushed this film a bit more in terms of awards, I think Tamara Jenkins direction/screenplay, Linney, and Bosco deserve nominations for their work in this movie.
Oh and I got such a kick out of listening to Hoffman singing to Lenya's "Solomon Song." It was such a treat.
Absolutely love her.
I rented The Hottest State this weekend. Stinkfest of a film but Linney is the one bright spot. She's flawless.

We taped Linney's appearance on "The Actor's Studio" last night, and just got to see it.
I just have to, once again, say how much I respect and admire this woman. Intelligent, thoughtful, charismatic, aware - and yes, beautiful. I just couldn't like her any more than I do, and I sincerely hope that we have MANY more chances to see what she has to offer!
