Posted: 3/2/05 at 1:26amDefinitely Conan or Letterman. I never understood the Leno appeal.

The only time Leno is funny is during the 'Jay Walking' sequences.
Other than that he is a bore.
Not funny.
Not witty.
Not interesting.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Letterman all the way. Post-911, post-heart attack, post-birth of his son he's revealed many more layers of himself.
Leno makes my flesh crawl and if you ever happen to see stand up comic Andy Kindler live, he has a riff on Leno that is sidesplitting.
Jimmy Kimmel is a complete non-entity.
I used to love Conan, but watched the first night of the show that follows Letterman when Craig Ferguson premiered as host and he's a scream, very winning and funny. I haven't watched Conan since.

I know I'm in the minority of the world here, but I found Letterman fabulous when he had his daytime show in the summer of 1980 (daytime fireworks, Mrs. Marv Mendenhall - who remembers?), and never enjoyed him after that. I find him to be pompous and self-indulgent.
I'd have to say of that group I'd choose O'Brien.

I remember the daytime show well. I also remember the final Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder, a couple of nights before Letterman premiered after the tonight show. Chevy Chase was Snyder's guest that night and he just kept going on about what a bad decision NBC had made, that Letterman was a DAYTIME guy. He went on and on.
Of course, Chevy's late night talk show was REALLY good. Ha ha.

CONAN.
I'm just sad that Craig Ferguson is in the same time slot. I'm also sad that the uber-tool of the universe Carson Daly follows Conan, so when I'm not paying attention, I look up and see that jackass's face begging to be liked. *shudder*

Posted: 3/2/05 at 11:30amI was actually surprised at how good Craig Ferguson is. I didn't even know who he was when he was announced as the new host of the The Late Late Show. I usually watch him on Monday nights (Apparently, Conan only works a 4-day week) and any other time that Conan is in repeats.

Letterman. Hands down.
Then, I watch Craig Ferguson until he bombs. THen switch to Conan for the rest of the evening.
I find Craig to be very hit and miss. Some nights he's on, others, it's painful to watch him.
Last night, Craig looked visibly uncomfortable with Don Rickles, and who can blame him. But once Don started ripping on Scotsman, you could tell Craig was near the end of his rope. As John Stewart said, "Un-COM-fortable..."

I've been a fan of Letterman since his early days as a morning talk show host and was thrilled to sit in on a taping of his show last summer, but he does seemed to have developed a rut. There's no more spontaneity or spark in his show any more.
I hadn't watched Leno in years because I found him rather dull and pedestrian. But I did happen to have him on Monday night and was absolutely knocked over by Ross the Intern and his post-Oscar coverage. That was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time and I was literally laughing out loud! I immediately visited the Tonight Show website so I could view more clips of his commentary. I really hope Ross winds up with his own show in the future. He's smart, witty, good with improv and fearless. Jay would be a fool to let him go.

I am not a fan of Letterman or Kimmel, necessarily. I love Leno, but I ADORE Conan. Hands down, the funniest guy on television.
PS - I also enjoy Jon Stewart.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 2:47pmI'd like to see Jon Stewart take over for Conan when Conan takes over for Leno. But that's five years from now. Who knows? Stewart may not be considered "age demographic" desirable, or cutting edge enough, by then.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 3:39pmI have a feeling Jon Stewart will stay with the gig he has- he has a sort of weird prestige that none of the other late-night hosts can claim, as the affair du Crossfire revealed.
