I think the Republicans should be treated with the same courtesy and respect that they have shown to Democrats when they were in power.
That's only fair, isn't it?
I'm not sure what the definition is of a sore winner, but yes I'll be gloating.
I've put up with 8 years of a tyrannical leader and listened to people defend him. I've visited countries where I was ashamed to be an American because of the atrocities this man has enacted.
This is the next best thing I can think of to an impeachment. Electing Barack Obama a man even I initially cast-off as impossible did the impossible and guess what? The change that we need to live in the 21st century is here. He did not support this war and the world will see and KNOW that. We will end it and restore the dream of every other Republican and Democrat in this nation.
I can sleep tonight knowing that someday my rights as an homosexual American will be upheld and I can live in country where ANYTHING is possible. Obama is THE DREAM.

Gentlemen, you make good and valid points. I just thought maybe we could try to set a better example, I guess. As a staunch Hillary turned fervent Obama supporter, I'd hoped we could all think about taking the high road.
However, if Obama gets more the 51% of the popular vote, I hope he declares it a "mandate." :)

As if you are the only one who has experienced this?
Get over yourself and grow up.
There is a lot of work to be done, and after doing a big old happy dance, we are going to have to roll up our sleeves, and work with those on the other side who are willing to move in a positive direction. We have a lot a problems, and we need to find a way to bring this country together after the election in order to really achieve change.

There can be no high road taken when dealing with these animals. Have we learned nothing?
Do unto them as they have done unto us. I promise you that they would be doing the same if the situation was reversed.
Believe it or not, there are actually honest, intelligent Republicans and Conservatives. It will be far easy, and more effective, to govern in an inclusive rather than exclusive manner. It would also go a long way toward growing the Democratic party, facilitating future national election campaigns. This is being viewed as a transformational election; why not make it so at a fundamental level?
We should not gloat. Lets not forget, we are not "them" MJHF. We are bigger than that and acting like a child with the most candy is just dumb.

That's all very nice in theory. We're talking about the creatures that lied about weapons of mass destruction, authorized illegal wiretaps into private telephone conversations, and have allow unConstitutional searches of people on subways. You can't be nice with these people.
Stop jinxing it!!!!! There are alot of people who do not poll honestly, so there's nothing in the bag yet!!!
If I was voting in Obama's district and saw the actual process and what is involved, there's no way I'm waiting for 2 hours to cast a vote today. It took Obama and his wife about 15 minutes to fill out the ballot and that was without waiting in line. Ridiculous...Why, in a national election, do we not have the same procedures for voting?
Get over yourself and grow up. YouWantitWhen???
"As if you are the only one who has experienced this?"
What are you talking about my words are inclusive of everyone when I speak of the importance of today. My personal pride is valid and I do not need to "get over myself" because I feel like I've been wronged the past few years. I include everyone because I feel Republicans have been wronged as well and may well be just too ignorant to get it. (who knows).
My brother died on 9/11 and the sitting president has DONE NOTHING but invade the wrong country to steal oil instead of finding the man he blames. I take all of this personally. There were days during the Bush presidency when I actually wondered how far he could or would go. Violations of the constitution left and right.
But as I said this moment this thing, this change, this Obama is for everyone. The work that Americans have done and the support for a man "nobody knew" means something to me. These people we assumed were lazy, uncaring, jaded seem to care now. Everything they said on television was wrong, everything. Meanwhile the entire landscape changed outside their bubble as evidenced today.
As YWIW said, nothing will get done unless both sides reach across the aisle.
It's time for everyone to work together. Truly time.
Look forward.
Great thread, Phyllis!

Right, yeah. Let's work with the Republicans. They're so open to collaboration with the other side.
Dream on, darlings. Can I have some of what you guys are smoking?
"Why, in a national election, do we not have the same procedures for voting? "
It's called "voter suppression" and Democrats seem to be content with it.
No, Roscoe. You can't.
And, I'm not dreaming. I believe that we HAVE to work together and I believe we CAN work together.
Glad you're not in elected office...
I'm with mc1227! Don't jinx it!!!!
I don't care if anything gets fixed. SERIOUSLY. The only thing I want is our military home. Once that's accomplished then we can figure the rest out.
REALLY, mejust? You don't care if ANYTHING gets fixed?
Then, don't complain about anything...
Honestly. Today is supposed to be about the promise of the future. Such negativity from so many. I'm sorry you feel that way.

No jinxing here. I'm just suggesting that people not be sore winners. I know nothing is a slam dunk.
Mejust - I appreciate how important this election is to you, and I am so very sorry for your loss (as well as the loss of so many) on 9/11.
But other than being happy that America may finally "get it" I worry greatly that the next few months will define the next four years - and it is important that while we celebrate, we do so because we are Americans and because we are not in it just to win, but to make this country better.
I will quote you:
"I've put up with 8 years of a tyrannical leader and listened to people defend him. I've visited countries where I was ashamed to be an American because of the atrocities this man has enacted."
Perhaps it is just me, that I did not see that as specifically inclusive. Celebrate tonight. Celebrate tomorrow. And remember this could not be possible without the support of Republicans and Independents who have repudiated the Bush/McCain policies. Then, get ready to roll up your sleeves, because the really hard word will begin.
And, on to another point, I actually think it is a violation of the equal protection clause of the constitution to have inconsistent voting procedures in the states, inconsistent ballots, and uneven distribution of voting machines.
I also think that there is an argument that for federal elections, the voting process should be uniform across the states.
Perhaps we will have the tools and resources to address voting rights and access now.
NYadgal - I think the biggest threat we face in the world today is our occupation in Iraq. We cannot repair our economy, our communities, our military or environment when we are hemorrhaging money and what political capitol we had because we fumbled.
"Then, don't complain about anything..."
I try not to.
