I suggest Rosa Parks and Ghandhi.
Matt G I was wondering that why people (not many people here) are so surprised when something like this comes out. I mean Bush has always played right into the hand of the radical Christian Right. It is his base and he would do cartwheels naked across the National Mall to keep them happy.

I think one of the keys is going to be 'coming out'. The time has passed when it is acceptable to hide away - for any reason.
I also think one of the possibilities is to stop paying taxes.
Gotcha. I thought you were asking me from what I said.
Touchme- Rosa Parks said we should kick their asses. I talked to her last night. She's a very nice lady. She does ramble a bit about the history and mechanics of city busses. I guess she got a tad obsessed with them a few years ago.
So...what?
Should I stop riding busses or stop eating salt?
Sorry I'm being flip, but what specifically do you think will work?
DGrant, I've said we should all stop paying taxes for a while now. And if Hollywood came out of the closet, I think that would be the biggest step imaginable with the reaction that would follow.

I agree about coming out. There is literally nothing more important than coming out. No one's political view gets changed until their friends are affected by policies. So, come out if you want rights.
Also, write letters. March in parades. Call homophobic people out on their homophobia. Demand that your friends do the same.

Robbie - Money. They can carry on all they want to about how Jesus is their lord, but money is what they worship - and we control a lot of it.
Matt - It was a political motivation that brought Ian out of the closet in England, and it at the very least helped their cause a lot.
Oh Touchme, I'm so tired of marching, of running in fund raising runs, of going to parties to support HRC, of writing letters, of donating to Lambda Legal Defence and HRC, in trying to open the eyes of my Republican mother. Thank goodness there are some of you out there with more energy to support the cause because I need to sit down and rest. I hope things change because of the November election, but I'm cautiously pessimistic.

Oh...and withhold sex from anyone who is not out of the closet. If they're not gonna help us, we can't "help" them.
However, money is also the reason that people in Hollywood will not come out. Ever.
Yeah, those peaceful demonstrations really help. I mean, look at how all those WORLDWIDE peaceful demonstrations, the largest in history, prevented Bush from bombing Iraq. He simply didn't care. That is the mind set you are dealing with on this issue.

Yes. Those peace rally's may not have stopped the bombing, but they will help in the future. Just watch.
And, you'll notice that Bush didn't do a number on Osama. Why? He loves his friends.
In the same way, if we befriend homophobes, they will learn to not attack us.
Exactly, BT.
I've done all that. FOR YEARS!!!!!! What now?
I'm thinking of going of to the Social Security Office and asking for a refund. I mean...they won't give that money to my partner when I die...so I'd like it back.
Anybody with me?
Touchme, please don't be offended but can I ask how old you are?
THEY DON'T WANT TO BE OUR FRIENDS. They want nothing to do with us. They want to see us get AIDS and die off.
"Listen girlee we have learned, non-violence will get you burned"
-Tony Kushner
I was gonna ask the same question of touch.
And I don't mean it to be offensive...but I wonder. Only because many of us here have been out for a very, very long time.

But Robbie - many, MANY have not - and I really believe that's a problem.
In the grand scheme of things...yes. Agreed.
I was just under the impression that most of us (especially over the age of 21) on this site are out in all aspects of our lives.
If not...I apologize for my erroneous, Pollyanna-like belief.
and SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME on those who aren't out!

Yes, Matt...the quasi-racist character said that in Tony's musical. That is unfair to claim those were his words.
Second, the point is that they hate us, but don't know us. See...the difference between us is that you believe people are prone to hate, and I believe people are prone to love (if given the education).
Matt, I'm older than you. Not by much, but I am older. I've been working with GLBT causes for over a decade now. Not long to many, but I'm fairly certain my education hasn't failed me too badly on this issue (assuming the point to your question on my age is rooted in the easy response of "well, you're young and I'm wise" -- which, btw, is another way of saying nuh-uh).
Grandpa Stopnick quasi-racist? I don't think that's necessarily true.
OOOOOOOOH...a thread in which we can argue gay politics and CAROLINE OR CHANGE??? This is my new favorite.
Not at all, Touchme. But at this point, I think it's naive to believe that you can just befriend the enemy and make it all better.
Like BT said, people who have been fighting longer than I have are tired and understandably so.
But I'm not. I'm not tired at all and I'm going to see equality in my lifetime by whatever means I have to get it.

Robbie - just to clarify my statement, I was speaking about gays across the country in all walks of life. I'm fairly certain that most of the adult gays that post here are very out - and probably have been for some time. the thought of myself being 'in', for example, is so impossible as to be laughable
Right? I mean...I don't think I was ever in. I mean, I've always been just so GAY!
My response was specifically about the 'older generation' of posters here. As for nationally, please sweet Jesus LORD these faggots need to get the f*ck OUT!
Im all for not paying anymore taxes!

Matt,
No one said "befriend the enemy and make it all better". There are two problems.
1-The befriending happens, and then struggles and debates happen over periods of years, and then...maybe...they will come to see the light (as it were).
2-We don't befriend the enemy. We befriend our neighbor. Did no one teach you Jesus' teachings on how to treat our neighbor? And, by neighbor, of course, Jesus meant everyone. To live life in any other way is truly naive.
I understand that people are tired of fighting, but...the trick to any political movement is perspective. As short ago as 10 years, less than 10% of Americans believed in gay marriage. Now, we're up to almost half. I'd call that rapid change...especially when compared to other movements.
