Life w/ Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows

Posted: 6/29/05 at 1:25pmI'm not that familiar with Lorna's work, but if her voice was better than Liza's, how come she doesn't have any solo cds? Surely she could have made it as a studio artist?

You missed Rath's breaking news on a thread last week: Lorna's Songs My Mother Taught Me comes out in August.
Luft's Songs My Mother Taught Me to Be Released on CD

Posted: 6/29/05 at 1:28pmLorna's voice is nice, but she absolutely does not work a lyric well. I've seen her show more than once and she just doesn't have the warmth, empathy, and communication skills of Judy and Liza.

Because talent and recognition do not always go hand in hand. And I am not saying that Lorna is a singer that deserves a recording contract or radio play. But comparing the two voices, she is more talented in my opinion.
And let's be honest - Liza hasn't exactly burned up the airwaves or the top ten lists with studio albums.

No. But Liza has a Tony, a Oscar, a few Emmys, .. shall I go on?

Liza has had a Grammy nomination though. And her Steppin' Out tour (aka the Radio City show) made her Billboard's top boxoffice draw that year. And, despite everything she's been through, she still gets work (which in itself says a lot about how people feel toward her).

Well; I will be the first in line to buy a ticket when Liza performs in Los Angeles again later this year. She is definitely the best live performer I have ever seen in my life. ( And I think I have seen all the divas.. Babs, Diana, Bette. Even though Bette puts on the best concerts of all.) There a magnetism that comes from Liza. True star presence. I guess you have to be there.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 1:43pmI do have to admit that I enjoyed her performances on Arrested Development.

Not every conversation about Lorna has to devolve into a competition between two sisters.
We all know that Liza has won multiple awards and accolades and Lorna did not win any until her memoir and the miniseries. We all know Lorna got clean and raised two healthy children and Liza suffered repeated bouts with addiction.
These are facts and need not be thrown back and forth to put the other down.
I admire them both. I wish they would conquer their demons and get together for LIZA AND LORNA AT CARNEGIE HALL.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 1:45pmI have nothing against Liza - she's fantastic, and I've seen her live more times than I can count. But as a singer, and a singer alone, I prefer Lorna.

Gotta agree with Rath here, exactly.
Stage presence and charisma, Liza.
Singing ability, Lorna.

Still;
I wish Lorna wouldn't perform and make a career out of her mothers material as she is attempting to do. And she has been doing it for a while. Years ago I saw her open for Don Rickels at the MGM in Las Vegas. And she performed much of the same stuff that is now in her show. It was even creepier because at the time MGM had Dorothy stuff all over the place.

Not trying to be argumentative DAME, but Liza's done it too. I think most offspring of successful who are in the business, if not iconic, performers, have cashed in at some point with varying degrees of success.
Liza did Minnelli on Minnelli at The Palace of all places.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 2:27pmWell, Dame, she hasn't been able to get attention any other way. I'm sure it's not her first choice either, or she would have been doing it all along.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 2:34pmI would hardly call doing Minnelli on Minnelli at The Palace 'cashing in'. Liza was pretty well established herself by the time she did that. Besides, the show related to her father's work not her mother's. And I suspect that most of the Judy/Liza/Lorna fans really don't know much about Liza's dad (who was certainly the most visionary of the bunch).

I love her concert from Radio City where she features some of his work.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 9:10amJudy Garland was the greatest singer of the 20th century. Period
#47re: Life w/ Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows
Posted: 7/6/05 at 9:11amIn my opinion she was the greatest female entertainer of the 20th Century. I have to go with Streisand as the greatest singer. (Ducking)

I think that Judy would be fine with Lorna "cashing in" on her music. Judy was intelligent enough to know that it's "Show BUSINESS", and with all her money troubles throughout her life, she'd be all about going after the buck by whatever means available. Now, I'm sure that she wouldn't want some cheesy disrespectful tribute to her, but from all accounts, "Songs My Mother Taught Me" is anything but that. If Lorna is achieving financial solvency by singing her mom's music, warble away, baby.
As to the earlier observations about why Davis took over so early from Blanchard in the mini-series, I read somewhere that even Judy Davis was against the switch so early. If she had had her druthers, Davis would have started at the Palace appearance in 1951, and left all the MGM years to Blanchard. Even Judy Davis thought she was too old to convincingly portray an "Esther Smith" Judy.
