No one can deny her the greatest entertainer title. I do think that as a vocalist, while extraordinary, her talent and the legend of her career/lifestyle get tied together.
Garland was rarely a radio staple, and except for the Carnegie Hall recording, was never really a force in the recording industry. She really only made a handful of albums in her career which is really shocking.
Her early recordings were tied to her MGM contract and her films.
Streisand on the other hand was/is a force in the recording industry, having really an amazing career behind the microphone to this day.
With the sequel to Guilty being readied for release in the fall, I think we are all going to be reminded of the popularity of Streisand as a recording artist.
Does she have the pipes now that she had earlier in her career, of course not, but I don't think one can deny her legendary status as a singer.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 9:32amTo hell with the Emmys and Golden Globes, Judy Davis deserved an Oscar for her uncanny and riveting performance. It was one of the greatest performances Ive seen in a long, long while.

I can't remember where I read this, but it has to do with Judy at the Palace the last time.
Two people talking in lobby.
"Does this really belong on Broadway? Is it art?"
"Of course, it's art. It sure as hell isn't singing."
Those quotes probably aren't exact but they are close enough to make the point. Does anybody know where I may have read that?

This was a great thread to read.
Count me in with those who feel Judy Davis appeared too soon. Garland was only 28 when she was let go by Metro. That point gets missed with such an older actress playing young Judy.
And while Davis was ferociously good (especially in her portrayal of Garland in the 1960s) I have always felt Judy Garland to be hysterically funny with a laugh that could make statues smile. Davis misses this aspect (in my opinion). While assisting my friend John Fricke gather photos for his two books on Garland we were stunned to find the majority of them showed Judy (and those around her) laughing. Those photos give credit to all the first-hand accounts that describe Judy Garland was a vibrantly funny woman. Davis cried so much throughout "Me and My Shadows" that I kinda wish they could have given her a warm humour.
...but the attention to detail (costumes, scenery, etc.) in this miniseries is astounding!!

So true about Judy's laugh. Her apperances on the Jack Parr show are lengendary.
"Hello, everybody. I'm Happy Harry."
"You three dirty hams, let that little girl in there."

"And it was ALL applause!"

Jack "Look how well you all turned out."
Judy's nonverbal response to that comment is HYSTERICAL!!
I hope someone knows what I'm talking about.
God, I LOVE Judy Garland!!

Posted: 7/6/05 at 11:27amAndy, I think you hit the nail on the head for me. Davis's portrayal was just too negative and intense. No fun! Judy was FUN!

Posted: 7/6/05 at 12:41pmI think one of the most endearing qualities Judy had was her ability to fully express her emotions - when she laughed the whole world laughed with her, when she cried, there couldn't be a dry eye in the house. I think Davis had the tumultuous and dramatic aspect of Judy down well, but I think her lack of the other parts of Judy just goes to show you what a unique person Judy was. She had such intensity in *everything* and I think people generally interpret intensity as negative or at least dark - being serious or angry, but being able to be intensely happy is a gift. It is a gift Judy gives me every time I watch her sing Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe or Get Happy or Happy Harvest...

convinceme2, that's the exact problem I had with Tammy's portrayal...I thought she was taking the characters Judy played in films and trying to make them into a real human being, and so I thought she was a but over-the-top in several scenes. Not bad by any means, but I thought Davis was more of Judy as a person than Judy as a character.
"I agree that Davis comes into the film too early (I found it jarring). I preferred Blanchard's portrayal over Davis'. When I was watching the segments with Blanchard, I felt I was watching a Judy Garland movie. The segments with Davis, I was watching someone play Judy Garland. Very well, I might add; but I never forgot I was watching someone "act" the role."

I luvs me some Judy Davis - but I think she was terribly miscast in this film. Blanchard was excellent as the young Judy, but the second half of the film is almost unbearable to me - Davis just doesn't look at all like Garland - no matter how much make-up and padding. Blanchard, on the other hand, looked uncannily like Judy, so much so that in that first shot of her on the set of The Wizard of Oz, it's creepy, very very creepy...
I have a friend who thinks Blanchard looked more like a young Bette Midler - but I thought she was simply stunning in the role.
