This seems a little too deliberate and calculated for it to be a random phrase by Obama. Now, it seems like the plan was to raise this issue to re-introduce McCain's past sexist remarks:

Such a ridiculous scandal, and it makes me furious that it's getting air-time even here in Australia...
The "scandal" may or may not be ridiculous. That it's getting any air time, anywhere, is!
This whole episode is not trivial. It has had a direct effect on me, and I am livid at Obama.
I have used this phrase several times to great effect in closing arguments to juries. It always gets a laugh, and underscores just how stupid opposing counsel's story is. I am allowed to use this phrase due to my hard-earned rural cred. Thanks to Obama trying to country it up and connect with those voters he used to think were bitter when they supported Hilary, I can't use it anymore.
I'm voting for McCain.
