Little Italy Museum Evicting 85 Year Old Tenant

I know that the museum has a right to evict her and her rent is way below what the space is worth, but articles like these always make me sad/cringe.

It's just an awful situation. I really hope things were out for this lady. I suppose it's part of the harsh reality of living in NYC - and a real eye opener on how society treats seniors now.

Like she said she's probably only got a few more years left, just let her live there until then or raise the rent a little bit more to a reasonable rate she can actually afford.

I don't understand why she would be driven to Staten Island to save on groceries though. They aren't that much cheaper here to make up for the cost of the gas and tolls it takes to do that.

Hardly good press for this museum and its mission to preserve Italian American culture and commemorate its formative significance for the neighborhood.

After 14 years of being in that location, I wonder what prompted the museum to act now.

Mister Matt: According to the article, the museum only moved to that particular location in 2008. It was initially founded in 2001 but was located in midtown.

The museum apparently began this whole process by trying to raise her rent substantially five years ago, after its plans to expand were halted by the recession.
