Supposedly Arthur Laurents saw the New Orleans video back in the 80s, and when she turned upstage before "But not Rose" and did that gesture with her hands, he turned off the VCR and said "That's exactly why she will NEVER play Rose."

A bonus for Liza fans: A very young, very sweet Liza sings "Together" on an Ed Sullivan show--and she sings it as a ballad!

Yeah....I loves me some Liza but that didn't do it for me.
Her Rose's Turn wasn't bad though.
Loved the shiny muppet dress in the first video.

Liza always has the definitive "Losing my Mind!"
If you search "Liza Minelli Losing my Mind" on that site its the third one down.

So funny.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 11:33pmI saw the Stepping Out tour. Some People was great. Losing My Mind was awful. During the number, the smoke machine was working overtime, and Liza disappeared in all the mist.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 11:57pmAll her Some People(s) stink, imo. Of course, nothing tops the one she did at the Ladies of Broadway thingy, that she went back and dubbed (badly), after.

She would have made a much better Louise than a Rose, IMO.
I still can't believe that version with Garland as Rose opposite her as Louise never panned out.

My favorite Liza album is with Judy. I love their versions of Hello, Dolly! and Wherever We Go. It's my favorite- Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli Live at the London Palladium !!!! I also love the way she sings "Some People." I have that version on "My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies" CD.

This is one of those stories that makes me not like Laurents at all. Like it belongs to him and no one else. Such an ego, it's ridiculous. You can't make a work like Gypsy, which has become so famous and micromanage it to death.
I can't wait until he dies and someone can direct it the way they want to, then I'll start going to see productions of it again.

I didn't mean that I wanted him to die, but if he's going to keep such a tight hold on his work like that, he will have to die before we can see a new interpretation of the work.
Ideally, I'd like Mr. Laurents to relax and look and listen to other people reinterpreting his work(s) and maybe start to see how many people have been touched by his work in so many different ways, but I guess that's just wishful thinking.
