I rented the first season of the tv show Love American Style this weekend. I had never realized that one of the vignettes in Season 1 was based on Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park." Was this done to test the waters for the attempted tv series?
I love that first season. So many episodes look like Sondheim's "Company."
I think they tried to spin off several sketches into sitcoms, and of course the most famous and successful being "Happy Days."

It's a great time capsule of the early 70s, even though a lot of the humor is not that funny.
Lots of people show up as guest stars. And it's great to see some Broadway people in the sketches: Reva Rose (Lucy in You're A Good Man Charlie Brown), Patsy Kelly, Brandon de Wilde, Kay Medford
Plus this was back when character actors were really character actors and they had some great ones.
I remember getting to stay up late to watch this! I had no idea they had released them on DVD! Thanks for the heads up!

Teri Ralson from the original cast of Company used to show up regularly.
This is going in my Netflix queue! I watched the 1st disc of Laugh-in last year and about to watch the second. After that I will start on these.

They've only released Season 1 of this show. It's interesting because watching it, I think if it broadcast in today's market, it would never make it past Season 1 because some of the writing is so silly.
Robert Reed appears in one of the vignettes and it must have been right around the time of The Brady Bunch. He had no right to complain about the bad material on BB because his material here is really bad.
Also in Season 1 are a young Regis Philbin, a young Harrison Ford and Peter Palmer (L'il Abner) among many other stars and working actors.
They probably got many of the bigger stars because the vignettes only run 15-20 minutes which probably only required one day of filming. But the episodes are packed with familiar faces.
There's one in the first season with Yvonne Craig (aka Batgirl) that I found particularly groovy.
There will be a lot to watch. There are 2 volumes and six discs for season 1.
