I adore my Ipod, but I've never tried anything else...
Although I do suggest, whichever MP3 player you get, check out Best Buy, Simply because they have 4 year product service plans which cover the battery, which will inevitably run out several times, covers technical defects too. My mother has had her menu button break too and they repaired that, it can be a lifesaver

You can bring it in right before the plan ends and trade your item in for the original price you paid to be put towards an upgraded model. Most people don't know about that, but my husband used to work there and it is a great service. I worked at Best Buy and trying to get good customer service from BB is like trying to pull teeth.

Toshiba Gigabeat 40.......40 gigs, absolutely love it
http://www.gigabeat.com/
and was on sale just last week at Costco for $299
I think when I bought mine, I paid more....LOVE IT, easiest part.....you can download right from a music cd through the computer TO the gigabeat, WITHOUT having to save it on your computer.......a MUST for me......

Archos AV 500. Check out the reviews on Amazon.com. Pricegrabber.com has several vendors that sell the 30GB model for under $500. Functions as an mp3/mpeg-4/wmv player, external hard drive AND portable DVR (including TV dock). Probably the most versatile machine on the market under $500.
