Maggie and Margaret Tyzack were fab in Lettice and Lovage.
I'm pretty sure I saw Pauline Collins and Vanessa Regrave on Broadway that same season.

OMG - Maggie, Margaret, Pauline and Vanessa all in one season. Throw in Eileen, too, and that would be some party!
Glenda and Sian would have been the cherry on that cake.
OMG - Carol and Maggie together?
Maggie did become Lucy at one point in Act II of Lettice and Lovage.
I don't agree about Ya Ya, I thought she was pretty bad in it. But then she was matched my every other performance, the direction and the script.

Agree about Glenda and Sian. Special invitation to Diana, too, I think.
What about an evening with them all.
The ticket price would probably start at $200 per ticket.

200 bucks at least. And what would the evening be called...'A Lavender Evening', perhaps?

No one has mentioned Harry Potter... Lol.
Maggie Smith is G-D.
I agree with Margo about her two Oscar-winning performances being absolutely brilliant. I especially love her in "California Suite", where she was extremely funny throughout the entire movie and then, in a split second, was able to turn around and break people's heart with the scene in bed with Micheal Caine ("Let it be me, tonight"). Amazing.
I love her in everything she does.. Even "Divine Secrects Of The Ya Ya Sisterhood", where the movie kinda sucked but she was hysterical. Other recent highlights for me were, in addition to the movies Margo mentioned, "Gosford Park", "Tea With Mussolini" and "My House In Umbria". Brilliant.
Oh and that sketch with Carol Burnett is perfection! I laughed so hard I almost peed myself.
my favorite actress. i even celebrate her birthday --12/28. i raise a glass. my cat, (muffin louise) is actually named for her as well (MAGA-muffin)
i've seen jean brodie about 17,000 times. her big confrontation scenes with celia johnson are textbook acting lessons. two greats going at it. THE LONELY PASSION OF JUDITH HEARNE put her in another stratosphere as a dramatic actress. her few lines in GOSFORD PARK crystalize her art -- she just bends a word here and there and KILLS IT!
back in the 90's i sat next to her at a performance of a show starring her dear friend, dame dench. i did not know where to look. i just managed a shy sort of smile at her at the interval, and then she asked me if i was enjoying myself. AND HOW!

"Yummy, yummy, yummy!"
favorite line....
'Where's my Dickie? er...Richard."
from Murder by Death.
I will agree with M_E; her best onscreen performance was California Suite.
If you want to see Dame Maggies greatest film performance, check out THE LONELY PASSION OF JUDITH HEARNE....absolutely heartbreaking!
THE LONELY PASSION OF JUDITH HEARNE is brilliant. I was in awe.
Tragically, not available on DVD.
I am so glad there are other fans of Bed Among The Lentils--one of the best performances ever. She was also amazing in a PBS film version of Suddenly, Last Summer.
"There's no need to wear a different frock every night. It's not a fashion parade."
When I was in college I saw her and her husbands Robert Stephens do Private Lives on Broadway.
When Amanda first sees Elyot on the adjoining balcony, Maggie (not yet Dame Maggie) did a triple take, with the classic lingering stare in the middle (as good as any by Buster Keaton), after which she scrambled halfway up the balcony trellis in shock. I will never forget the sight of her hanging there, as the audience continued to laugh.

Sounds hysterical. GG's post about 'Gosford Park' reminded me of her marvellous 'Don't encourage him' after the applause for Ivor Novello.
I adore Maggie Smith as well. She first came to my attention in Sister Act when I was younger but then I started to see more of her films as I got older. I LOVED "My House in Umbria".
(About Sister Act...was anyone else disappointed to find out Wendy Makkena didn't do her own singing??)
