"Also aiding Hollywood's bottom line is Mamma Mia!, the Meryl Streep-led ABBA musical that, for a non-Batman movie, enjoyed a killer opening. Its estimated $9.7 million Friday gross positions it to potentially beat out Hairspray as the biggest-opening movie musical."

I didn't like it, but I guess if it is successful, it helps to green-light other musicals.
I loved it for what it was. Had a great time. Very happy it is a hit. Very happy hollywood has put out another successful movie musical. And I am very happy the movie musical continues its steady comeback.
Healthy numbers like these are so important for movies musicals to continue getting made. So yea for that.
It helps when you have a film starring Meryl Streep.
In addition to Streep, there are plenty of fans of the stage musical, and ABBA was wildly popular in the 70s.
Love Abba.
I loved it. Thought it was very entertaining, very well done and a good time was had by all. And, that's the entire point of going to the theatre or a movie.

I hope that everyone who doesn't like it stews about it for days - no, WEEKS - and I hope they have uncontrollable gas AND their hemorrhoids flare up.
AND that their dog dies - as a direct result of this INSULT to their sensibilities.
Feeling a little agressive there DG?

Yes, as a matter of fact
I finally decided that if the naysayers can have their uncontrolled ridiculous rants, so can I.
And I haven't even seen the damn thing!
Or better yet, the haters can wait for events from Harry Potter to happen in real life. Yes, I was told that Harry Potter is more realistic than any musical.
I saw it with a theater packed with queens at Outfest. FABU.
I'm so very sorry that my opinion does not sync up with yours DG.
I guess I MUST be wrong then.

*sigh*
I actually wish we could have too, DAME. We just couldn't face theater complexes this weekend - the insanity was just too much.
Tazzie.. what happened? didn't get your buzz going on before the flick?

I saw it in a packed theater IN Queens. P.U.

Taz - why are you taking it so personally? Obviously there are those who want to not only crap all over it, but take it to the level of insult to those who actually liked it.
If you start a satirical condemnation thread, then perhaps you can start to take it personally
No, I was in a mood and posted my critique in another thread. I guess it didn't sit well.
I am delighted that so many people are loving it though.
I remember how much I loved Hairspray last year and how good it made me feel.
Luscie.. don't be pissing on my good time. Not into golden showers.

Funny you should mention HAIRSPRAY, Taz - I liked that one, too!
Good God, my taste really DOES suck

well i didn't like MAMMA MIA and that's okay and others did and that's okay too. i personally would not go out of my way to criticize or belittle those who did find the find the film enjoyable. i wholeheartedly agree that if this movie pulls in impressive numbers or even bests HAIRSPRAY's opening week numbers that more movie musicals will definitely be considered and that to me is a GOOD THING.
I didn't like it either but I don't wish it to do poorly, nor do I wish to take any joy away from anyone who liked it.
Maybe we should wish for jerks to suffer those fates, dg.
