Just another manic Monday
Wish it were Sunday
That's my fun day
My I-don't-have-to-run day
I was just talking with a friend and this song came up. We argued about what the last line really means. I've always thought it was a reference to working out (as in "I don't have to jog today"), but he insists it's a more figurative meaning (as in "I don't have to run around and do things for my job/run errands"). What do y'all think?
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

Posted: 6/22/09 at 4:31pmI always assumed it was the latter as well. Sunday is my I-don't-have-to-run-around-like-a-headless-chicken day. In other words, the opposite of "manic".

Posted: 6/22/09 at 5:30pmSorry SM, I think it's the latter. Especially because this song was from 1986, when jogging wasn't as popular. Also, if it were the jogging, why would she have to wait until sunday not to run? she could not run any other day.

How much is your bet worth, and how much will you cut me in for? Otherwise it's the latter.

Posted: 6/22/09 at 6:41pmI'm in for option B, too, even though A sounds much more appealing. Sorry, Stagey.

Thanks, Mister Matt, and everyone else for playing. Now I just have to come up with 100 buckaroos somehow. Anyone wanna give a friend hand? Or rather, I give you one? I'll do anything for $8/hr. :-P
BTW: Jane, to answer your two questions, I was under the impression the so-called fitness craze began in the early '80s (as evident in the Jane Fonda workout videos and Olivia Newton John's "Physical" music video), so by 1986 I figured it had become standard practice. Secondly, some people work out during the week and take the weekend off. For example, I've usually done weight training Monday/Wednesday/Friday and cardio Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday, then take off Sunday. So that's what I thought she'd meant by "My I-don't-have-to-run day." But guess I was wrong. :-/

Fun fact -- Prince actually wrote the song.
(notice the verse sounds an awful lot like the verse to "1999," too)

Calvin, I knew that Prince had written the song, but I hadn't realize the "Manic Monday"/"1999" similarities. I just listened to them both to confirm and the verses do sound similar.
Speaking of songs that sound alike, I ran into this clip from THE BLACK STALLION awhile back. The tune that's being played on the flute sounds an awful lot like Vangelis famous theme for CHARIOTS OF FIRE -- and STALLION was released 2 years earlier!

I had no idea and I'm having a difficult time processing that information. It would help to see him perform it. And by "help", I mean "be hilariously surreal".
