The United Church of Christ ordains "practicing" gay clergy.

In 2005, it became the first mainline Christian denomination to support gay marriage.

Hmmm, so odd I can't find anything pro-gay on their website. And this "same-gender love" ministry is not listed anywhere on their official site. I did find they offer a martial arts ministry though. Seems like a typical, more liberal church to me. The one that welcomes all because they want your money and support, but still think you are a sinner for being gay and only offer half-support for equality, meaning we won't openly bash you on Sunday, but don't count on us to support your right to marriage.

United Church of Christ Backs Same-Sex Marriage

By SHAILA DEWAN
Published: July 5, 2005

ATLANTA, July 4 - The United Church of Christ became the first mainline Christian denomination to support same-sex marriage officially when its general synod passed a resolution on Monday affirming "equal marriage rights for couples regardless of gender."

The resolution was adopted in the face of efforts to amend the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. It was both a theological statement and a protest against discrimination, said the Rev. John H. Thomas, the president and general minister of the denomination, which has 6,000 congregations and 1.3 million members.

"On this July 4, the United Church of Christ has courageously acted to declare freedom, affirming marriage equality, affirming the civil rights of gay - of same-gender - couples to have their relationships recognized as marriages by the state, and encouraging our local churches to celebrate those marriages," Mr. Thomas said at a news conference after the vote by the General Synod.

The United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination with about 1.3 million members, has been one of the most accepting religious groups of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, although not every church in the denomination is supportive. The church?s General Synod recently endorsed full civil and religious marriage rights for same-sex couples.

LGBTs Welcome
In 1985, the UCC?s national organization, the General Synod, began a national effort to reach out to gay, lesbian and bisexual church members through its Open and Affirming movement. Churches that are designated Open and Affirming have publicly declared themselves welcoming to LGB members, leaders and employees. In its resolution, ?Calling on United Church of Christ Congregations to Declare Themselves Open and Affirming,? the General Synod said:

"Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are often scorned by the church, and devalued and discriminated against both in the church and in society. We commit ourselves to caring and concern for lesbian, gay and bisexual sisters and brothers by affirming that:

"We believe that lesbian, gay and bisexual people share with all others the worth that comes from being unique individuals;

"We welcome lesbian, gay and bisexual people to join our congregation in the same spirit and manner used in the acceptance of any new members;

"We recognize the presence of ignorance, fear and hatred in the church and in our culture, and covenant to not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, nor any other irrelevant factor, and we seek to include and support those who, because of this fear and prejudice, find themselves in exile from a spiritual community;

"We seek to address the needs and advocate the concerns of lesbian, gay and bisexual people in our church and in society by actively encouraging churches, instrumentalities and secular governmental bodies to adopt and implement policies of non-discrimination."

?[This resolution] encourages a policy of non-discrimination in employment, volunteer service and membership policies with regard to sexual orientation; encourages associations, conferences and all related organizations to adopt a similar policy; and encourages the congregations of the United Church of Christ to adopt a non-discrimination policy and a Covenant of Openness and Affirmation of persons of lesbian, gay and bisexual orientation within the community of faith.?

An article from the Christian Science Monitor points out that "the UCC - a union of Congregational and Evangelical and Reformed churches - has long been a precedent-setting denomination. It is proud of its historic "firsts," which include being the first denomination to ordain an African-American (in 1785), the first to ordain a woman (1853), and the first to ordain an openly gay man (1972)."

Copy and paste all you want, Obama's (former?) church is still anti-gay regardless of it's denomination of choice. And Obama will do nothing for gay rights, mark my words. We have been used as a tool, and now will be put back in the tool-box.

Obama's church is no more anti-gay than you are.

Why don't you just admit you're wrong? Just like you were wrong about Patti.

You're just wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, WRONG.

PalJoey...how old are you? 12? Well, I know you aren't 12 because I know you're a tired, aging queen. But regardless, Obama's church and most churches are not in support of same-sex marriage. I have seen many churches that welcome ALL members, and do not preach "hate" against gay people, but deep down they still believe being gay is a sin and not in support of same-sex marriage. While the United Church of Christ's foundation may be pro-gay, each individual UCC is not. Just like there are some pro-gay Catholic churches (few and far between) even though the baseline teachings say to be anti-gay.

And why do you keep harping on Patti?! I was not wrong about the fact that Patti got in trouble from Equity after a complaint was lodged against her for the ridiculous behavior, on and off stage, she exhibited during GYPSY.

You have this compulsion to claim to know things you don't.

You make things up and then you lie about them.

No, I actually don't. However, you do have an obsessive interest in me. Wishing you were somehow young again? Knowing that you never will?

And, as always when caught in one of his outright lies, he attempts to lash out.

Why don't you try telling the truth, for a chance? Or, at least, try talking about something you actually know for a fact?

Ciao.

Will one of you soldiers help AZ? All you have to do is look at our Governor and our previous republican candidate for president to see that there is no hope for marriage equality here. And we should all look out if stupid boney c**t Sara Palin becomes president, because if she does, goodbye gays entirely, and goodbye anything arts oriented.

So yeah, we'll never get to get married here. A lot of people ask me why I just don't go somewhere else and get married. Simple. If I did that, I'd still come to where we're all just perverted freaks.

But the church in Iowa may only have that opinion because the practice was legalized there.

that is because it is complicated. He opposed DOMA as terrible (as opposed to unconstitutional)law that infringed on the right of both states and the federal govt to pursue a diverse course of remedies to discrimination. He personally opposes same sex marriage but describes his views as evolving. My bet is that they will finish evolving after he is re-elected.
