So, I guess this is what people are living in fear of...

Posted: 6/3/09 at 10:29amI live in fear of being beaten to death by a group of drunken straight guys. That and burning alive.

Phyllis, that of course is part of what's fueling this, but in general the first step in denying rights to a group of people is to dehumanize them.
And of course, the two approaches are not mutually exclusive. Look at the fear of black sexuality that fueled (and justified) racism for centuries.
(Responding to your earlier post, not the one about burning to death.)

Interjecting a funny thought:
If sex is for procreation only, shouldn't those that are up in arms at the thoughts of gays marrying stop having sex when procreation is no longer physically possible...?

In talking to my neighbors, of course the first thing they mentioned was allowing gay marriage would lead to people being allowed to get married to their dogs.
I think the only response to this is "No, it wouldn't."
If you engage in the marrying-pets discussion at all, they win automatically.
"Don't be silly."

When ever anyone says "It will lead to people marrying their ________." I just say then we should ban marriage all together, because it's allowing people to marry at all that leads to these problems. If it weren't for "straight" marriage. Gays wouldn't be asking for it.
They rarely have a comeback for that.

"Or you could just lift your leg and pee on them."
I actually did do that.

It's all just so painful.
I just feel pain whenever I hear someone say that they don't support gay marriage. Or equal rights or any kind.
I want you to be married, also, PalJoey! I want it for anyone who loves another person and wants to make a commitment. I want it for all of us.

"I do respect their right to have that opinion, and I don't think priests or ministers should be compelled to officiate a gay wedding, even in the civil sense."
And that's fine by me. I couldn't name a single person who would want to be married by someone who didn't want to do it.
That sort of goes along with my theory about gays in the military: It's not like gays are just going to run in and join because they can (if they were allowed to join openly), but for those who want to join the service, they should be allowed.
Gays are not going to force someone to marry them against that person's wishes.
They make it sound like we are going to hold a gun to a priest's head or something.
(Okay, maybe just the few douche bags PRS talked about?)
If this is all about "Family Values" and a "Traditional Home" then they need to work on that. If murders can get married in jail, then why can't we? There will never be a father for the child (which they are always against). Make Divorce illegal, and Adultery punishable by stoning (well, that's what the Bible says!).
There is no traditional home any more. The image of a Father, mother, kids, house, picket fence and black kitchen help is a thing of the past.

And Dan,
This is the perfect time to educate your neighbors. Ask them why they believe what they believe. What information are they getting that is telling them these things? Ask them what would affect their marriage if two gay people got married.

Congratulations to New Hampshire...both the Senate and the House have passed legislation allowing Same Sex Marriage. The Governor is expected to sign the bill ASAP! Perhaps as early as this evening!
That will make 6!
