No. It will not be the same store. It's basically one more step in the "Walmartization" of America. One further step in the trend to liquidate everything local into some vast, ugly, anonymous, interchangeable, multinational "brand".
For New Yorkers who can't understand, think of it the other way around. What if Marshall Field had come to Manhattan and renamed Macy's. This is a very sad thing for Chicago and what Field represents here. Chicago history since the 1880's has always had Field's.

I have been shopping at Fields for 40 years. I will NOT shop at Macy's in Chicago.
If I wanted to shop at Macy's I'd go to New York.
I stopped buying Frango Mints the day they stopped making them here.
What a shame.
Same happened in Seattle... the Bon-Marché, a Seattle fixture, first became The Bon-Macy's, and finally switched to Macy's earlier this year. It so bothers me that everywhere you go, it's the same stores.
I remember The Bon.
I wonder how long we'll keep calling the store Marshall Fields.
I hope the people who work in Marshall Field's will be able to keep their jobs with the change.
It is a very sad thing for Chicago. It was a landmark business.
In Boston they will lose Filene's. To maker matters even worse, The Macy's chain already bought out the department store that was across the street (Jordan Marsh). Sadly I just don't care for Macy's.
Here in Atlanta, we have already lost our venerable hometown store "Rich's" to the Macy's name / nationwide branding strategy. It was very sad for many of us with strong ties to Atlanta and Rich's. Change is inevitable, but not always a good thing. Don't get me started on the sad, slow decline in the level of customer service provided at most retail stores these days.
and Robinsons-May here have all been bought by Macy's......
I was really pissed when Dayton-Hudsons bought Fields some years ago........and now I'm downright upset. Field's is an institution.
Steve was awed by the downtown store.......I am glad he got to see it when it was still Field's
My mother still calls it the Bon.......she refuses to say Macy's
Chicago people are pi##ed off. The Red Eye is full of scathing commentary this morning. As a Chicago resident, I will miss Marshall Fields. I've been to Macys...I'd rather have the landmark Marshall Fields here in Chi. Whatever.
I didn't notice anyone getting steamed when the Scubert Theatre became the LaSalle Bank Theatre....I guess its all relative.

Marshall Field's has been a Chicago landmark for 150 years. The geniuses who came up with this re-naming plan should be looking for work in 6 months. Amusingly, their "market research" showed that 2/3 of people thought the "name of the store made no difference." I wonder what the results would be if they asked "Would you be upset if Marshall Fields was renamed Macy's?" Local media is doing their own surveys, one of which showed that 96% of Fields shoppers would be less likely to shop there after a name change.
This is the worst business decision since "New Coke."

Oh, this is awful! I love our Marshall Field's!

I'm sorry, but it seems to me that the Marshall Field's name and the corporate symbol, the giant corner clocks on the building that survived the Chicago Fire, could be named historic landmarks and therefore block Macy's plan.
This is almost as bad as Harrah's buying the Horseshoe, but at least they didn't change the name.
Folks, we're on a slippery slope here. Before you know it, all department stores will be Macy's, all 'cheap' stores will be Walmart, all casinos will be Harrah's, etc. etc.
As a Chicagoan, I'm sad. I love saying "I got them at Field's". I actually did a report on Marshall Field for a History of Chicago class I had in college.
It's really a shame.
My town used to have a Hudson's.
Then it became a Marshall Field's.
And now it's becoming a Macy's?
I just don't see the point.

In the film Demolition Man, in the future all restaurants are "Taco Bell." Due to chain mergers, Taco Bell is left as the only restaurant and provides all different styles & prices of food. It's not that far of a stretch I suppose.
here in Ohio we're slowly losing all of our Kaufmann's Department stores to the Macy's name. *shrugs*

I don't know if it will do much good, but there is a web based petition to sign to keep the name that was mentioned in the Tribune this morning.
It's keepitfields.org
(I tried posting the link but it didn't work)

Kaufmann's was a family born Pittsburgh institution that grew. And yes, there was also had a tradition of meeting under the Kaufmann's clock. They had exclusive lines that will be gone forever. They too have been bought by Macy's and a change is due any day. To rub salt in the wound the Horne's chain was bought by Lazarus which was bought by Macy's. So now many of the Kaufmann's store will just close because of Macy's presence already in most locations. The options available just keep dwindling.
Catalog shopping anyone?
It is called progress (not)
