I'm with 'floats. Yes, this cost taxpayers millions to prosecute -- a woman who slid by some rules to save herself 40 thousand bucks, pocket change for her. And okay, she was scapegoated, to be sure. Hit harder to make a point. Maybe even because she was a woman. I get all that. But then, the trial started. They brought in a jury, some of whom were her fans; they introduced the hard evidence; they make a compelling case; Martha opted not to take the stand and they had but one witness. And then the jury simply found her guilty.
I think it's using a hammer to kill a cockroach, too, but at a certain point, we must remember, it wasn't created out of the thin air. Anyone who followed the trial knows: It all goes back to one person--Martha. I know she's hardly a threat to our ever-flexible ethics in this country. And yet, had she not pulled what she pulled it wouldn't have happened. Don't we have to remember that, and not see her as a victim here?
I'm sorry, 43 million people have no health insurence. Half the African American men in NYC are unemployed. In comparison Martha didn't want to lose her "walking around" money. I have to react on a sliding scale.
