I believe the premiere of Masters of Sex has been available for a while now, but it officially premieres tonight on Showtime. Michael Sheen (oh, this man), Lizzy Caplan, and Nicholas D'Agosto lead the cast which, for this episode, includes Margo Martindale, Annaleigh Ashford, Helene Yorke, Steve Rosen, and Beau Bridges.
I thought it was interesting, personally. I liked how they added the fertility subplot to show that the study is personal for Dr. Masters. I think Lizzy did a great job, and I'm interested in seeing if they'll further corrupt Nicholas's character. Some of it did drag, but not to a large extent.
Nicholas plays Ethan, right? I cannot imagine how they can make that character redeemable. I also found the performance a little too fast-talking when everybody seemed to speak in a period affectation with slowed down speech.
I am interested to see how time is handled. In 10 yrs. the research really takes off and in 15 yrs. Masters & Johnson get married.
I did like it and while Mad Men comparisons are apt to an extent (3 directors in this season alone have directed for Mad Men previously) but it seems much more straight-forward about its period and not John Cheever-ensue as Mad Men. Cannot wait for the rest of the series.

I've been seeing ads for this all over. I really like Lizzy Caplan so I'll probably check it out.
And I think Lizzy does a great job. As does Michael Sheen, but that's par for the course for him.
As for Ethan, I don't really know where they can take the character, whether they try redeeming him or not. Will he try to stop the study? Will he try to get back with or get back at Virginia?
I love Nicholas D'Agosto. I'm admittedly one of the few people who absolutely loved Fired Up. But... he'll always be that kid in Election to me.
lol @ "the alpha dog of coochie medicine".
I thought it was the best pilot of the year so far, hands down.
Is anyone still watching this? In an admittedly pretty lackluster season of new shows, it's quickly become my favorite, despite a few (small) issues. One big issue though is with all the nudity, why do they cast Finn Wittrock as a male prostitute, even with a sex scene, and NOT have an ass shot.
Despite not great (although they've kept steady) ratings, it has been picked up for a second season.
I do think the show has gone from strength to strength and episode five was filled with so much--and an ultimately devastating scene (without spoiling too much.) I hope more people are giving it a chance.
Michel Apted directed directed episode 5, surprisingly, but it handled the mix of somewhat crude sex comedy to drama perfectly -- though I do think the acting and design are what really make the show. I still cringe at the few really cheezy lines that seem too easy (usually involving the word come.) It's interesting that it seems to be one of the few premium cable hour long shows I can think of with a mainly female writing staff (maybe not interesting as much as unique.)
And I will say, episode 6, which I don't think has aired yet but is available for download, is disappointing in some ways, going back to the ham fisted writing I disliked about some of the early episodes (I LOVED Alison Janey but some of her material felt way too obvious.) But there's still a lot of great material there.
