Irritated that my wife wants to see this movie because she has the hots for Cooper. Never has she mentioned a war movie she wanted to see. All American troops who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq were volunteers as far as I know. They chose to go to war thousands of miles from home. Don't feel I owe them anything.

I've already seen a swell of support for it on Facebook among "Libertarians" as the "tragedy" that "Americans" face in war with exclamations on how much they cried and how it's the "truth" and on and on and on...
Well, that's interesting. Most people would probably call me a libertarian, and I find the subject matter of this movie - a known malicious liar and professional killer who thought non-American lives were pretty much worthless - so odious that I wouldn't waste my time on it under any circumstances. My handful of online and in-person libertarian friends seem to agree. I don't doubt your data points, but I'm not sure I'd consider them real libertarians (and perhaps vice versa!).

Just finished watching American Sniper. It's nice to see Clint making a comeback. I thought the film was pretty good. Nothing great but nothing bad either. Don't see why people are getting their panties in a bunch over it. Shame about the Baby though.

I read it and I thought he was right on some points and completely off on others. But this is what people do every year when a war film comes out. Zero Dark Thirty had the torture controversy and now this. Trouble is, there isn't really anything to get all up in arms about, other than it's a mediocre film. Calling it "everything wrong with our country" seems like a gross exaggeration. It was a story based on a book about a Sniper's war experience. Nowhere did I feel that they were trying to paint him as this unsung Hero. Matt Taibbi just sounds bitter.

I don't know if I'm remotely representative of the (WGA) voting block, but I've had my screener since the week before Christmas, just about a month, and twice put it on and took it off, mere minutes into it. I'm not proud of that, but it wasn't censorship or denial; I simply couldn't commit to the investment, and certainly wasn't willing to go there after the trailer so put me off my BLT. Two people have dared say something so disingenuous as "listen, the movie is absolutely apolitical..." I mean, INTO THE WOODS isn't apolitical. The idea that one brings some mystical concept of classical heroism to this film, a mindset untethered to a subjective response to specific recent conflicts and cultural divides or devoid of a sober awareness of the last two decades of tumultuous history is frightening. It's time for me to look at it. But I am more troubled by its global groundswell of consumer endorsement that I imagined.

I almost never know what people mean when they call someone bitter. I usually take the adjective to mean someone who has been through a particular experience and emerged from it jaded and somewhere on the continuum from sad to angry, somehow. But lately it seems to be applied to people with whom one agrees and from whom one wants to distance themselves.
I can understand not agreeing with Taibbi's assessment. But "bitter" doesn't make sense to me in this instance.

You are right. Bitter probably wasn't the best word to use. What I was trying to say is, Matt obviously went in wanting to hate the film before he saw a single clip from it. He had an axe to grind because of his political stance and therefor it was hard to read his article objectively when he himself wasn't being completely objective.

I haven't seen it, so what do I know? The trailers are certainly compelling. But I've been startled by the way it's seems to have become some sort of litmus test for patriotism: If you don't like it, you don't respect our armed forces, or some such.
But again, I can't judge it as a film yet.

Exactly. People are calling it a culture phenomenon on social media and that's just BS if you ask me. It seems like no one is going into this film without some political agenda. It's on both sides.

Yeah, Reg. KID ROCK is freaking out that anybody dare criticize it.
