I'm sort of glad I'll be forced to see this at the Showcase because I probably wouldn't see it otherwise. Like 90% of Eastwood films, even the trailer looked as exciting as watching After Eight dry.

I remember when Salon used to try and print real news... so long ago. I mean, just dissecting their first point... if someone sees a pre-9/11 terrorist attack on TV, and that inspires them to join the military, and then after 9/11, the US *does* go to war in Iraq and his unit gets deployed there... which is what the movie presents and seems to be an accurate timeline for Kyle, how is that the movie implying there was a link between 9/11 and the Iraq War?!
Also, why would the movie even need to imply there is a link between 9/11 and Iraq, since there was one? At the time, Bush, Cheney, and Colin Powell said there was. Powell did a whole PowerPoint presentation about Iraq at the UN...
So, there was a direct link between 9/11 and Iraq. The movie wouldn't need to "imply" it, because it was true. Was it all bullsh!t? Of course. But why would that be something American Sniper would delve into?! Unless Kyle felt misled by the administration afterward, and felt he had gone there for no reason (the only situation where Salon's point would be valid), then why would it be in this movie?
Okay, I tried to watch this film during my lunch break...all I have to say that it is the biggest load of crap that I have seen in quite awhile. It's manipulative film making. It's a great example of the worst kind of film making possible. I hope it gets shut out at the Oscars and that Cooper, who I do love in everything else he's done does not win in his category.

Do Clint Eastwood and the screenwriter REALLY not know the difference between Sunni and Shia?
It seems like it should be a prerequisite for writing a book or article or making a film on Islam.
(And the Salon article makes it clear that this mistake was made in the movie only, not in the original book.)
All American troops who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq were volunteers as far as I know. They chose to go to war thousands of miles from home. Don't feel I owe them anything.

CarlosAlbert and I have the same reaction to the screener. I keep hitting "eject." On the other hand, Namo's comment on nursing via waxed pecs brings up all kinds of fantasies, most of the Rod Serling variety.
