When asked by a Kansas City newspaper if Obama is a socialist, McCain shrugs and says "I don't know".

My grandfather was a Trotskyite, and my Aunt Molly was a Leninist.

Oy! The fights they had over that Five-Year Plan!

What kind of interview is this? Look at the Reporter's question:

"Extreme? You really think hes an extremist? I mean, he's clearly a liberal," interviewer Dave Helling asks.

He's not that liberal and his voting record isn't either.

Then McCain:

"That's his voting record," McCain responds. "All I said was his voting record, and that is more to the left than the announced Socialist in the United States Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont."

Um Bernie Sanders? Barack Obama is not for Gay Marriage, he is not for the impeachment of George Bush, he isn't for immediate withdrawal from Iraq, he is not for single-payer health care. These talking points are PATHETIC.

It's called an innuendo. The journalist is obviously on McCain's side but is trying to sound somewhat objective. He brings up words (liberal, socialist) that strike fear in conservatives and some moderates minds and by asking the question plants doubts and fuels suspicion in among those people. Communism is passe, so Socialism is the next best term.

By McCain saying he's "not sure" no one can accuse him of calling Obama Socialist, but the seed has been planted.

It's a common propaganda tactic that's used when all else (such as rational and logical arguments) fails.

"McCain is not sure if Obama is a socialist."

I'm not sure McCain is a human being. I think he's a robot being operated by a faulty remote control. Sort of like Robert Stack in the last season of "America's Most Wanted"...

i thought Obama was for gay marriage. he said in California that he will try and fight for the right of 2 people who love each other to get married as much as he can. Michelle spoke out vocally for it, too.

do you mean a national plan for equal gay marriage throughout the country? or at all?

When I talk about gay marriage I mean federal marriage rights. You can call it ANYTHING you want but it has to be equal.

He nor Hillary Clinton, nor John Edward are for "Gay Marriage." They are for civil unions or similar marriage status (domestic partners) state-by-state.

The problem with this is that without federal protection same-sex couples are denied some 1100 rights straight couples have access to. These include things like the right to marry foreign nationals, federal tax breaks. Basically the reasons we want the right to marry or need to marry.

Most leading democrats are not for this "publicly.' Which to the best of my knowledge is not liberal, nor is it true equality. Believe it or not we had people running for president that were for these things. There were people on this board bashing Obama on gay rights despite having the same record as Clinton. So she marched in some parade. She still isn't for upholding the constitution and neither is Obama. When this issue was brought up in several debates both Clinton and Obama came out with what they feel is a balanced approach to appeasing both sides. It's unconstitutional.

Alas this is what we are faced with. So Obama is not a liberal and liberals have never confused him as one. The right and many Clinton supporters may have but he isn't. I wish he was, but he's not.
