Posted: 1/8/08 at 10:45pmI drink hot tea more often than coffee - if I do drink coffee, 95% of the time it's iced. I go to Starbucks because I like the atmosphere.
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

And Starbucks will use the words 'large' and 'small', not pretentious crap like grande and tall.

Posted: 1/8/08 at 10:47pmI do my tea drinking elsewhere after I ordered an Iced Tea at Starbucks only to be told they didn't have any. I explained they could brew HOT tea and pour it over ice. "No" the Barrista explained "we can't."

Starbucks rocks my world upside down and inside out.
Oh, and those Baristas are HOT.

I work for Starbucks, so perhaps I'm a tad biased... But I don't think I'll be heading into a McDonald's for my cappuccino any time soon. I've barely even eaten their food for a couple years, after just skimming "Fast Food Nation". McDonalds still kinda grosses me out, no matter how much I love their fries.
Starbucks offers more drink options, plus the ambience is better. I'd rather wait in line at a Sbux listening to James Taylor and munching on some coffee cake than in a packed McDonalds surrounded by screaming children.

The Mom and Pop story was cute but that is not happening in NYC.
NYC is known for being unique. I don't like Starbucks coffee. I am like Mamie, it tastes like burnt toast. I also don't like seeing one on every other block in the City.
I prefer diversity. There are very few chinese restaurants that are affordable in NYC because Starbucks and chains like it are the only ones that compete with the expensive real estate.
I have seen so many wonderful restaurants in Times Square and The UWS close because of it.
I am not against STARBUCKS. I am against seeing one and Duane Reade on every other City block. IT IS ANNOYING.
Manhattan is not a MALL. Makes me very upset. I bet Raku will turn into a mini Starbucks!

I think Starbucks need to add fabulous sushi and chinese food. Then maybe I would like it. I do love the Frappucino drinks but they have more calories than a tempura dinner and I would rather splurge on that.
Starbucks sushi. That would make it better.

Posted: 1/9/08 at 9:03amYou could move to Massachusetts. I saw one Starbucks in six days there. The place is lousy with Dunkin Donuts.

I think I may live in one of the only places that does NOT have a McDonalds. (Although there is one right over the town line) But living in a college town there is no shortage of places for coffee (even tea). Not one of the "Mom and Pop" places closed, as a matter of fact a new one even opened! Starbucks has given a lot back to the local community, by collecting coats and gloves in winter, donating to the local schools and so on.
One thing however I do wish they would bring back the 'Chantico"

I love NYC. I just miss the old NYC with more MOM AND POP chinese and Japanese places.
I think Starbuck Sushi is a great idea. I love the atmosphere at Starbucks. I think they need a sushi bar and wine. Then I WOULD GO.
Diversity makes NYC different from every tiny town in the USA. Starbucks on every block takes a little bit away from what NYC used to be. Just my two cents.
Starbucks Sushi has a nice sound to it.

NYC has a shortage of chinese restaurants?
How many blocks do you confine yourself to Corine?

Do tourists really need or want the same Starbucks coffee they have in their town?
If someone in Corporate headquarters reads this I hope they will start a Starbucks Sushi and wine bar.
And only in NYC.
There are a lot of chinese restaurants in Chinatown but around the UWS and Times Square the numbers have been shrinking. We lost 7 great places in those areas in the last year alone.

Posted: 1/9/08 at 9:33amYes, they do Corine. It's called familiarity. Apparently, New Yorkers want them too, or they wouldn't keep opening stores in non-tourist parts of the city.

Need or want? Obviously since all the Starbucks I've ever see are packed - I'd say the answer is yes. Regardless of how anyone might feel.
And if you know anything about tourism - you know that many tourists go for the known vs. unknown. I don't "like" it - and would never while I was visiting another area - but it's a fat. Why else would an Olive Garden in Times Square be packed every night while dozens of amazing Italian restaurants close by and some even less expensive go without their business.
So to answer your question - yes. They do want and need Starbucks.
#42re: McDonald's Latte: are you Lovin' It?
Posted: 1/9/08 at 9:34amTourists want everything they have in their own town. That's why Times Square is full of national chain restaurants. That's why H&M and Forever 21 are always packed with tourists. Makes no sense to me either, but that's how it is.

Also proven by the MEGA McDonald's on 42nd Street. Back to their coffee ... I can't wait to drive-thru and try some!

Posted: 1/9/08 at 9:58amSOMEONE needs to compete a bit more healthily with Starbucks. The 'bucks might actually have competitive prices if they had more competition.
#45re: McDonald's Latte: are you Lovin' It?
Posted: 1/9/08 at 10:36amHey, now, don't be knocking H&M! Actually, my Texas friends all want to go there when they visit because there isn't a single one in the entire state. Or in any state that borders it.
#46re: McDonald's Latte: are you Lovin' It?
Posted: 1/9/08 at 10:39amWhich is kind of ironic since a lot of their stuff is made in sweat shops in Mexico.

"That's why H&M and Forever 21 are always packed with tourists."
So very true Rath! I can shop at H&M here at home and not pay a sales tax on clothes. seeing that store packed to the gills really shocks me.

"Do tourists really need or want the same Starbucks coffee they have in their town?"
Is New York really all that famous for its coffee? As a visitor, I see no reason to seek out an alternative for my morning caffeine fix...
I am a Starbucks fan, and when I am in New York, yes, I do seek out the Starbucks for coffee (and to Corine's point, they are pretty easy to find).
But then again, I like Starbucks, I think the coffee tastes great, so it works for me. If I didn't care for the coffee, I might be singing a different tune...

I think the coffee New York is famous for is corner cart or diner coffee, served in a paper cup, "regular."
And to the Tea question, I'll drink Iced Tea anywhere I see one of these cool "tea Brewers." Panda Express has great Iced Tea, as does Panera (Which is good, because otherwise I'd be forced to drink Diet Pespi, which is worse than swigging the devil's bath water). And, coincidentally, McDonalds makes some wonderful Iced tea, also.
