That's right I said it. Any thoughts about a Memoirs Of A Geisha Musical?
Only if Sondheim or JRB write the music for it...
I agree. That would be a very tricky musical and I think only a select few are up to the challenge of putting it to music.
If anyone could though, it would be Jason Robert Brown.
Saw a commercial for the film last night and it looks spectacular!
Go Rob Marshall!
Well if it were to happen, we might see Lea Salonga's name in the mix!

Bring it on. Why have Pacific Overtures be the only major example of Japanese theater being brought into American musicals? Sayuri works hard and takes pride in her dancing, all the geishas learn to sing and play instruments, and let's face it- underneath it all, the story is a gorgeously costumed, atmospheric historical Cinderella story. What could be better-suited for a musical than that?
I think LaChiusa could do it justice... or JRB or Sondheim. That's pretty much it.
I'd be worried about it being another example of exotifying Asians. "Look at those Japanese with their kooky customs and fancy gender roles! Let's get that souvenir kimono in the gift shop!"
This sounds to be right up LaChiusa's alley.
I would also add Adam Guettel to the list of people who might be able to do it justice. Sondheim would, of course, be my first choice, but any of the up and coming big three would also do.
BlueWizard, that is exactly why it should be someone like Sondheim who adapts the book, I'd worry that others would make it too much of a caricature.

Sondheim doesn't write his own books. John Weidman did the book for Pacific Overtures, though I'm not completely enamored of it.
I think yoda meant the novel of MEMOIRS...not the book to the musical.

I saw the trailer for the movie, it looks stunning.
You have to stay out of the pub during working hours, girl!
Not sure about Sondheim for this one. His scores are great for material that leans towards comedy, but for drama, it can be a bit cold. Brown or LaChiusa could be great. But personally, I think this has Ahrens and Flaherty written all over it.
Hell no.
I'm reading the book right now. It's fantastic!
