Didn't really see her in the role, but this pic makes me more of a believer.

I buy her as Julia more than I do as Sister Aloysius.
And yes, I've seen the extended preview.
And I LOVE Meryl!

Can't wait to see it. I hope it's as wonderful as the other gourmet movies. "Like Water for Chocolate", "Babetts Feast" and the "Big Night" were great movies.
Meryl is perfect to play Julia Child.
Looks like a absolutely mouth-watering confection of perfection!
I agree with Q on all counts. Naturally.
With all due respect to Ms. Streep, only one person can prtray Julia Child, and that's Dan Akroyd.

I think that's a pretty good likeness. And if there's anyone who could play the entertaining character that Julia was, it's Streep.
Child was such a strong character that it's hard not to go over the top and make a cartoon out of her. This will be the first time we'll see Julia done seriously. Meryl's the one who can do it!
Can't wait.
The only thing about Streep that isn't quite right is her size. Julia was six feet tall! I hope they try to cheat that a bit on screen (which they can, if they work at it). It was an important part of her "character."
(It's the equivalent of casting a 6'2" Napoleon---just doesn't quite work.)
I also agree that I buy her more as Julia Child than Sister Aloysius.
I hope it's a good story! Julia's life was certainly fascinating. Let's hope there's a decent script for Meryl.
EDIT: Oh, yeah, I forgot ... it's Nora Ephron.
*cringe*
And don't forget Julia's signature way of speaking! Meryl's the champion of accents!
And yes, Julia was at least 6 ft. I saw her outside of Balduccis a long time ago and I was thrilled to see her just standing there!
I'm pretty sure Meryl could convincingly play Julia Child, Julia Roberts, or Raul Julia.
Count me in.
besty, they sold 5'-8" joaquin phoenix as 6'-4" johnny cash, why not meryl as julia?
For that matter, they sold a 5'9" Brando and a 5'10" Steiger as Napoleon.
Well, in the Harry Potter series, Robbie Coltrane has been playing a half-giant, and he's not very tall at all.
For that matter, why not Meryl as Johnny Cash?
I could have sworn the title of this thread was "Meryl Streep as a Child"
She has aged so well.
Them's some good bones!
I too forgot it is Ephron guiding the project. Now I am a little scared.

This is a great, fun easy read book. I can't imagine how the movie will be. I do have faith since Meryl is in it.
Who does Ephron sleep with to keep getting work?
The head of Julia Child's estate?
From an interview I read, John Patrick Shanley wrote DOUBT with Meryl in mind. She was offered the part, but couldn't do it due to other committments. I see nothing wrong with her doing it.
I cannot wait for this. Who's playing Pepin?

Forget Dan Ackroyd - the best Julia Child was John Candy in SCTV's "Battle of the PBS Stars", in which Julia Child faced Mister Rodgers (Eugene Levy) in a boxing match.
There was also one-act opera in which Jean Stapleton toured as Julia Child. It was basically an episode of The French Chef, in which she bakes a chocolate torte, set to music.
