DG: I struggled a bit with your question, as I have not been as up to speed with reading enough to properly answer what public voices I feel should be heard more often. So if I may "cheat" and put forth three groups, I hope that suffices for now...

To start off slightly flippantly, in a world where food is often seen as the enemy, I disagree. And so, delightful food writers such as Mimi Sheraton, Ruth Reichl, Jeffrey Steingarten, Peter Mayle, etc. Celebrate food. Savor it. Enjoy it.

I have a great respect for political dissidents, as they make the choice to voice their concerns and disapproval with how their countries are conducting themselves. Such a choice is a brave one, particularly when there are many more of their compatriots who choose to be silent. And these dissidents too often silenced by those in power and disagree. Two come to mind at the moment. Jiang Qisheng of China and Nobelist Aung San Sun Kyi or Myanmar.

Finally, as someone who works in science, I find it appalling that science when commissioned by the federal government can often be dismissed. Or even silenced. Those following the news may have read about Dr. James Hansen who has been "muzzled" by NASA from presenting his studies regarding global warming. Federally funded science. Prevented to share results that the government funds. Something wrong with that, dontcha think?
