How do they fit the ships into those little bottles?
not exactly...
on that note, g'night all.
Ah papa,
He's a bit of a hero to me...for so many reasons.
I'll simply say that he's strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark.

Papa, god willing you'll never have to, but if you had to, which Black Eyed Peas song would you pick to have stuck in your head for the rest of your life: Let's Get it Started, Don't Phunk with my Heart, My Humps, or my personal favorite, Pump It?
eddie, the only good gundark is an earless gundark.
namo, i'm going with my humps and then a .40 federal nyclad hollowpoint to the cerebellum.

Papa...
Where do you go to find solitude?
What will be the epitaph on your headstone?

Who's your favorite writer? Fiction, non-fiction, journalist, whatever.
I hope I didn't miss this being asked before...

I second the beer question. But to me that question is like being asked to pick your favorite child.
I have a question. Lights on or lights off, sexy?
papa are you having a good weekend?
favorite beer? wow...i've always been a big fan of harp which sometimes causes my conflict with my preference for murphy's.
solitude? the sauna, sweating with a set of rosary beads.
my epitaph? unabashedly stolen from the royal tenenbaums, "died tragically rescuing his family from the remains of a destroyed sinking battleship."
writer? tie between thomas harris, tom clancy and thomas merton
both, eddie.
i see i wasn't the only one who checked out what was on pbs last night, sueleen.
mominator, i'm having a smashing weekend. wasn't able to sign onto the site last night, which was a bit of a downer, but will be around most of the day while making chili.
to the person who pm'd me...
a combination of the two.
papa, can i have some of that chili? i'll bring cornbread to go with it.
you said you spent a vacation in southern utah. have you been to any other states in the four corners - and what did you like best about the southwest?
hope this isn't too many questions for a sunday morning but i have another:
you said one of your favorite authors is thomas merton. what appeals to you most in his writings?
and does you chili have a secret ingredient and would you share it?
for your convenience, a summary of my questions: chili; four corners states and the southwest; thomas merton. you may answer them in any order or combine them all in an essay.
In line with those questions - have you seen a lot of the US? If you met someone overseas who was getting their first (and possibly ONLY) visit to the US, where would you tell them to go? What are the 'can't miss' spots? What do you think is the most beautiful place in the US?

thomas merton.......this is why i love you, papa.
that and murphy's.
and sex.
jtf, the only four corner state i've spent any time in was utah: bryce canyon and zion, the petrified forest, basically. it was just breathtakingly beautiful. having come from a state of little or no grace like ohio, i was blown away by the landscapes of southern utah. merton's simplicity (full disclosure, he was a friend of my uncle's). no secrets for the chili, but time. lotsa time.
mamie, i haven't seen a lot of the us. i'd tell them to spend some time in the beauty of the southwest. you can see monuments to technological achievement anywhere, but the grandeur of the natural wonder that is the american southwest is a sonnet to american history. that may change as i spend more time seeing the country.
undi, all my o'rourke came from rolling stone in the late 80's.

Thomas Merton? Omigosh. I'm a Bonaventure Grad. Thomas Merton is very big at Bona's and Merton's Heart is the clearing up on the hillside.
Tom Clancy--do you like all the detail/background he gives. Sometimes it is so interesting, other times I just skim it (but I feel bad knowing how much work in it.)
Thomas Harris--which one book do you like best?

on clancy, it depends, beacon. the last few books, to me felt like first drafts in search of an editor. he tends to repeat himself, but up until the bear and the dragon i could deal with it. rainbow six felt like a screenplay with padding, and red rabbit was nothing more than a cast off sub-plot from cardinal of the kremlin but teeth of the tiger engaged me. so i guess it depends on the book.
for harris, to me it's hannibal for my own perverse reasons. i loved that he took characters that everyone thought they knew from the silence of the lambs movie and basically turned them on their heads a bit as if to remind the world, they are mine and i'll do with them as i will. i could just hear him giggling as he wrote it, "yeah, let's see you make this into a movie!"

I suspect that Thomas Harris is secretly the nom de plume of an elderly grandma in Jersey. She tucks her grandkids down for a nap, goes up the attic and begins to type...
wouldn't THAT be a kick in the head?!
And, have you seen the Merton collection at St. Bonaventure?

never seen the merton collection, and i met harris many moons ago at a writing sabbatical. i wasn't writing, i was dropping off wine. bad wine for which he reproached me.
iran. assemble the best team of special ops guys and girls i could find and get to the business of whacking the majils and the president and funneling funds to the opposition. the killings all done covertly, of course and made to look like accidents. something like a building collapse that takes out the majils leaving evidence of the contractors having used substandard materials while walking with the cash. even better if one of the majils had a relationship with the contractor so the irony is out loud. a stroke, mid-speech for he pres so he hangs on for a while and doesn't become a martyr right away.
