The Weinstein Company has set a June 29 release date for Michael Moore's Cannes-bound documentary Sicko and brought in Lionsgate to partner on releasing the documaker's first film since Fahrenheit 9/11.

Variety says Lionsgate will release the film in the U.S. while The Weinstein Company handles all marketing and publicity duties and puts up all P&A costs.

TWC is also handling international rights and is offering the doc -- a critical look at the U.S. health care system -- in Cannes after its world premiere.

The deal reteams Bob and Harvey Weinstein with Lionsgate three years after the movie-mogul brothers picked the indie studio to help roll out Fahrenheit 9/11.

"Lionsgate was very helpful the last time, and this time we're happy to have them involved again," Harvey Weinstein said. He added that he sees Sicko as a less controversial film than "Fahrenheit."

"I've seen this movie with Republicans and Democrats, and this is one time Michael has sort of unified everyone," he said. "The health care industry might not have a very good July Fourth."

"Fahrenheit" brought in $222.4 million in worldwide box office and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes

Jerby, did you ever see Micahel Moore's The Awful Truth? He did a segment on confronting Fred Phelps. He got a bunch of gay guys into a car called the Sodomobile and confronted Phelps around town. It was AWSOME! I can easily see Michael Moore taking on the anti gay movement in the near future!

I was working in the pharm industry while Moore was putting this together. He gave out the number for the communications dept. of our company to auditoriums full of people, telling them to call and say that he was downstairs in our lobby. Which of course he never was, and the calls came in for weeks. Not quite sure what he was trying to accomplish with that, but the communications people sure had fun with it. I don't think that was his goal.

"LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore is under investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department for taking ailing September 11 rescue workers to Cuba for a segment in his upcoming health-care documentary "Sicko," The Associated Press has learned.

The investigation provides another contentious lead-in for a provocative film by Moore, a fierce critic of President Bush. In the past, Moore's adversaries have fanned publicity that helped the filmmaker create a new brand of opinionated blockbuster documentary.

"Sicko" promises to take the health-care industry to task the way Moore confronted America's passion for guns in "Bowling for Columbine" and skewered Bush over his handling of September 11 in "Fahrenheit 9/11."

The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control notified Moore in a letter dated May 2 that it was conducting a civil investigation for possible violations of the U.S. trade embargo restricting travel to Cuba. A copy of the letter was obtained Tuesday by the AP."

Ah, the pre-"Sicko" smear operation is ramping up.They're so tragically predictable.That's worth another $20M in box office receipts!That will give him some free publicity..Instead of going after Moore the US gov't should be going after Osama - remember dead or alive- at every press conference and Pundit TV show they should be asked where is Osama and why hasn't he been caught yet.

Isn't if very very odd that James Dobson, Pat Robertson and Jerry Farwell have NEVER been investigated for the fact that they are tax free and continue to carry out partisan political activities. How in the hell can you get the IRS to investigate REAL TAX FRAUD???

I can still remember a couple of years back, the Friday night that Fahrenheit 9/11 opened, and thinking that getting tix day of at the box office would be no problem, only to get to the box office at about 5:30pmish and have every show, on two screens, sold out for the rest of the night- the theatre had apparently added a midnight and a 12:30am show even, and even the midnight one was sold out, at 5:30pm.

And then how when I finally got in to see it on Saturday, how the audience was possibly the most diverse movie-going audience that I'd ever been a part of- there were teenagers and grandparents and two or three generations of whole families and couples and groups of friends and all different races and just...everyone.

I don't know if Sicko will match all of that, but I am totally planning ahead this time and will be getting my tix before the day of!

I think SICKO will attract more people than F911. EVERYONE admits there is a problem with our healthcare, even the Bush supporters. Sure, they may wish the messenger was someone else but Rolling Stone Magazine got a early peak and says SICKO has the feel of "Roger and Me". Michael has returned to his roots and if thats true, this could be another OSCAR for him. Since the film is debuting at Cannes, which begins next week, its possible he could win Best Picture for the 3rd time at Canne!!! Oh Gee's! His critics will just hate that!

In all seriousness though, I may not be a fan of Michael Moore but he is unbelievably talented as a filmmaker. I hope SICKO will be as intriguing and as fascinating like BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE than the ego trip that was F911.
