I was born Catholic also, went through all the indignities of a Catholic school education and then one year decided to give it up for Lent. And beyond.

Deet, I do believe that is called self-excommunication. Or just "selfex" for short. There are quite a few of us here. In fact, I am surprised by the number of selfexers who have found refuge at BWW...or maybe I'm not.

Posted: 11/3/07 at 7:00pm"Sexcommunication" is something else entirely. That's when you're talking to someone you really want to sleep with and you say things like, "I love Edward Albee, too! We should go to see one of his plays together." And "I know a great place for polenta. Maybe you and I can meet there for dinner sometime."

Posted: 11/3/07 at 7:03pmYes, well there is that. And I was very young when I said it. At a family gathering one Easter. My very Catholic, saintlike Aunt dropped a tray of hors d'oevres. She's been praying for me every since.

Agreed.
The interesting thing about that exchange though was that most of my cousins shortly after admitted that they had dropped out of the church as well.Including two of Aunt Saint's kids.
I'm still the only gay cousin. (Well, the only openly gay cousin. I have my suspicions about a couple of 'em.)

Wow, some of you guys got off easy when you were confirmed! We had a 6 page test (part of which was writing a prayer from memory. Some people got easy, often used prayers... other people got prayers we learned when we were like 5. that portion counted for 25% of our grade on the test) and then an hour meeting (each) with our priest. One of the requirements of that, was knowing the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit and an example of how we would apply each to our everyday lives. They were seriously hardcore at my church! lol
As for what grade I as in, I was confirmed May of my Freshman year in High School. We had 54 kids in our confirmation class.
I remember most of what I learned in CCD and all that I learned from my Godmother. It's not hard to remember what we learned though, after all those years of catholic school (I spent middle and high school in public school) and still being a very active part of my church today (I sing in the choir and help my godmother lead the youth choir).

I'm one of the 'Selfex' group.
And started young.
D2, there are times I think we're the same person living different lives, based on the simple choice of urban or rural living!

Sueleen, it is very possible that Leslie is a family name, and perhaps all sons get that middle name.

I am definitely in the minority on this one. I'm far from what one might call a "bible thumper" -- I don't 'preach my faith' to others, talk about church, the bible and God incessantly (though I do talk about Choir a lot -- we have a lot of fun) and in fact, I typically avoid religious discussions all together. They usually wind up getting heated and turn into a debate and as devout in my faith as I am, Im not going to sit there and debate and defend my beliefs with anyone.
Anyway, getting back on track. I absolutely looked forward to making my confirmation. It represented a lot to me.... both in the religious aspect of my life and my life in general. I know so many people who loathed the entire process of confirmation. Hated the pomp and circumstance of it and to this day, remember VERY little (aside from the gifts they got). It's such a foreign thought to me. I look back on it with fond memories and my sponsor/godmother is still a very big part of my life today.

My confirmation meant a lot to me as well. I also chose St. Therese of Liseux, the Little Flower. She seems to be a popular.
In retrospect, I sorta wish I'd gone with Mary.

FF, that's funny... She's my patron saint from Confirmation as well. I mentioned it in one of my original posts. But I took the name/saint because it was my sponsor's middle name/saint.
Im actually wearing my St Therese medal as I type this lol

I chose it because I had a great-grandmother named Theresa (who was still alive when I was confirmed), and I was named after another of my great-grandmothers (my name is Angela, her name was Angelina, and she was named after her great-grandmother Evangelina), so I felt like I should add on to the great-grandmother naming thing.

I "self-excommunicated" even before I was confirmed, but my mother threatened to disown me if I didn't go through with confirmation, so I just did it. Most of my family still doesn't know that I'm an athiest, but once I'm in college and a financially independent adult I'll make sure to tell them.
I absolutely got off easy on Confirmation, but for the most part I can still recite all the prayers from the Rosary, name all the Sacrements and some of the other random Catholic-y things. When I get dragged to Mass, though, I don't take Communion--I might not believe in Catholicism but I don't want to mock i, I'm nowhere near pure enough to receive the Body of Christ.

I didn't have a confirmation name. I guess they don't do that for Episcopalians.
I feel left out.
I'll just tell everyone that mine was "Midge."
That's MUCH better.
