Posted: 7/16/09 at 11:37pmRed neck, hick history classes? What on Earth... Michigan isn't the most hillbilly populated area... and I don't think I have had a single republican teacher in my life. I live in a very liberal area, so thank you for totally making something up. And why must we continue to alter the definition of marriage. Separate can be equal if executed properly.

no because my giving gay unions a different name you are stating that they are not equal to heterosexual unions.
If its not good enough to be called marriage, its not good enough for me.
and you're a self hating homosexual.

I am for civil unions with full benefits,
How many times do I have to tell you this is impossible?
I have posted this before. Readit, PLEASE.
===
There are over 1,400 rights and benefits conferred on marriages that the House Judiciary Committee and the GAO enumerated. These rights are protected as the married couple travels from state to state.
Civil unions, which exist only in 4 states, vary by definition from state to state. Moreover, one state is in no way obligated to honor the terms of another state's definition of civil union.
Under DOMA, other U.S. states are not obliged to recognize them at all.
These are some of the legal rights a civil union would NOT necessarily confer on a gay couple:
===
* joint parenting;
* joint adoption;
* joint foster care, custody, and visitation (including non-biological parents);
* status as next-of-kin for hospital visits and medical decisions where one partner is too ill to be competent;
* joint insurance policies for home, auto and health;
* dissolution and divorce protections such as community property and child support;
* immigration and residency for partners from other countries;
* inheritance automatically in the absence of a will;
* joint leases with automatic renewal rights in the event one partner dies or leaves the house or apartment;
* inheritance of jointly-owned real and personal property through the right of survivorship (which avoids the time and expense and taxes in probate);
* benefits such as annuities, pension plans, Social Security, and Medicare;
* spousal exemptions to property tax increases upon the death of one partner who is a co-owner of the home;
* veterans' discounts on medical care, education, and home loans; joint filing of tax returns;
* joint filing of customs claims when traveling;
* wrongful death benefits for a surviving partner and children;
* bereavement or sick leave to care for a partner or child;
* decision-making power with respect to whether a deceased partner will be cremated or not and where to bury him or her;
* crime victims' recovery benefits;
* loss of consortium tort benefits;
* domestic violence protection orders;
* judicial protections and evidentiary immunity;
Most of these legal and economic benefits cannot be privately arranged or contracted for. For example, absent a legal (or civil) marriage, there is no guaranteed joint responsibility to the partner and to third parties (including children) in such areas as child support, debts to creditors, taxes, etc. In addition, private employers and institutions often give other economic privileges and other benefits (special rates or memberships) only to married couples. And, of course, when people cannot marry, they are denied all the emotional and social benefits and responsibilities of marriage as well.

Posted: 7/16/09 at 11:42pmSeriously, stop calling me that. The only one on this board who would know if I am self hating or not is ME. I say I am not, so you continuation of saying that is childish. I really do not understand why you have to be so rude when you talk politics with someone. It isn't very hard to talk calmly and nicely to others. That is a skill learned in kindergarden!

Chance-no I am not. You have NO actual proof of that. My political beliefs are not proof, and I am in no way self hating.
PalJoey- If civil unions would include every last right listed, why do I have a feeling many gay activists would not be pleased solely on the merit that they want to continue to tick off religious people...

Posted: 7/16/09 at 11:46pmno we wouldn't be pleased because UNLESS ITS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE CALLED MARRIAGE, ITS NOT GOOD ENOUGH BECAUSE UNTIL ITS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE CALLED MARRIAGE ITS NOT F****** EQUAL YOU SELF HATING HOMOSEXUAL.

Posted: 7/16/09 at 11:49pmSo, you would rather have no rights, versus all rights with a different word? Stop calling me that! I am so sick of narrow minded people like you. People who are so dependent on being victimized, that everyone is against them. And, when someone has one difference, they have to be ridiculously mean to someone who has not even done anything wrong to you.

YOU HAVE ADVOCATED AGAINST ME BEING AN EQUAL CITIZEN. SINCE WHEN AS THAT BEEN F***** NOTHING?
you've sought to keep me a second class citizen.
i wish nothing but pain and suffering upon you.
You don't deserve to live a happy life.

The amazing thing about the internet is that it gives everyone an opportunity to display their ignorance - and I can see that Chance loves to grab onto an opportunity.
Your big mistake, Chance, is that you are displaying total INTOLERANCE for someone whose views differ from yours - and for someone arguing FOR tolerance and equality, that's simply a really stupid-ass thing to do. Combine that with your natural eloquence and choice of vocabulary, and you have reduced yourself to nothing more than a minor annoyance.

Posted: 7/16/09 at 11:53pmI do not advocate against you or me. What I am advocating for is still something much better than we have now. And I think you are just a mean, cynical person, who has to play the victim to feel important after making no difference in the world. I wish nothing but bliss for you, and I hope you live a long and healthy life. You see, I am not a mean enough person to wish horrid things upon others.

you're arguing that I don't deserve to get married. I'm not good enough to get married, and for that you can go **** yourself.
again, nothing but pain and suffering.

So, you would rather have no rights, versus all rights with a different word?
I used to say "Give me civil unions in my lifetime and I'll be happy."
Then Prop 8 happened--and an ugly evil mob took away a legal right, and I ceased being an incrementalist.
I want marriage now, and I want to make your life a living hell until I get it. Why should my 15-year-long relationship be ONE IOTA LESS LEGALLY PROTECTED than anyone else's?
I don't WANT to get married in you Catholic Church or your Mormon Church. Don't put words in my mouth and say I do.
I want to get MARRIED in my gay synagogue, with the blessing of my lesbian rabbi and my partner's Unitarian minister, and I want every legal right heterosexuals have.
Nothing less.
I no longer care how bigots feel about the word "marriage." They lost the right to claim that word when they voted in Prop 8.

Whatever. I am done being verbally abused by people who will never be able to get married, simply because they lack the ability to debate without spite. You will never advance in this movement if you make people who oppose gay marriage even more against it! You need to learn that, or be prepared to never marry. Chance, I never once said gays aren't good enough to get married... Your hateful speech only allows bigots to feel satisfaction that they keep people like you down, and you should be ashamed.

ypu said that gays shouldn't be allowed to get married, what other reason could you have besides thinking they don't deserve?
WHAT REASON DO YOU HAVE TO OPPOSE GAY MARRIAGE?
oh, whats that? you don't have one not based on your magic man in the sky and his bull**** stories?
oh that's too bad.
go **** yourself.
#40re: More racism from the GOP
Posted: 7/17/09 at 12:13amMagic man in the skies? So now you actually assume I am a religious man? My reason, I have stated many times, on many threads. I am done arguing with you people, because I only like to debate with people who can control their emotions.

HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO CONTROL MY EMOTIONS WHEN YOU DON'T THINK I'M AN EQUAL CITIZEN DESERVING OF THE SAME RIGHTS AS EVERYONE ELSE?
YOU'VE TOLD ME I'M LESS THAN HUMAN.
YOUR BIGOTRY, NOT MY EMOTIONS, IS WHAT NEEDS TO BE CONTROLLED.

#44re: More racism from the GOP
Posted: 7/17/09 at 12:19amPhyllis, I still have no idea why you thought I was a sock. And Chance, you are incredibly irrational in your tirade against me. I never told you that you are less than human. All you do is take things I say, twist them into me being anti-gay all together, and say what is on your mind with no censor at all.

#48re: More racism from the GOP
Posted: 7/17/09 at 12:25amThat is called twisting my words to make them fit your portrayal of me. Congrats on that, but it is no where near accurate. I don't think you are less than human. I don't think any gay is less than human... why would I? That would make no logical sense at all. And really, this thread got soooooo off topic haha. Amazing what one person being mean can do to a thread. Chance, you are human. No more, no less. Congrats on that as well.

WElcome to the fight for equality.
They keep putting up the same ****ting arguments over and over, and when we DESTROY THEM, they put them up again.
If it wouldn't be such a disgrace to the historic event i'd say they're stonewalling.
