Posted: 1/12/07 at 12:59amDo you guys have any? I'd say THE USUAL SUSPECTS rates pretty high. Everyone knows the ending by now, but the first experience of watching that movie without knowing what's coming up is pretty amazing.

Every book by Jodi Picoult.
My Sister's Keeper was especially twisted.

Posted: 1/12/07 at 1:36amTHE SIXTH SENSE's ending could be easily guessed. The opening scene makes it so obvious.

I haven't seen it since it first came out, so I have no idea. I just remember everyone being shocked.
I know that you're too smart and that that film is too mainstream for you, but please. Credit where credit is due.

The ending of THE SIXTH SENSE ruined the movie for me because then certain earlier scenes don't make any sense.
*spoilers*
For instance, since he was already dead, wouldn't he have grasped earlier that his wife (or pretty much anyone else) never noticed him, except for the kid? I mean, apart from what we saw.
Case in point: When he arrives at the restaurant and his wife is crying and it appears (at the time) that she's talking to him before she storms off. He assumes that she's angry with him for being late. My question: How did they make dinner plans if we later learn that he's a ghost? Wouldn't he have tried to communicate with her many times before and clearly noticed that he was being ignored?

Posted: 1/12/07 at 1:51amThere's a key line that explains this in the "I see dead people" monologue: "They only see what they want to see."

I never thought that shark was going to roar in "Jaws: The Revenge" but, baby, it ROARED.

Also, when the kid arrives home and finds Dr. Crowe waiting in the living room with his mother, wouldn't she have had to let him in (read: answer the door)? And while waiting for the kid, wouldn't Crowe have attempted some small talk with her? The film doesn't hold well in the overall scheme of things.
All I'm saying is that he should've caught on much, much, MUCH earlier that he was clearly dead. Then again, we wouldn't have a movie.

Posted: 1/12/07 at 2:05amI was just going to say that Rose. The little boy explains that dead people believe what they want to believe, because they do not know that they are dead.

SM2 - you must rent the dvd and see the extras of The 6th Sense.
Even though I wasn't crazy about The Prestige, the ending made the movie worth it for me.

Posted: 1/12/07 at 3:12amThe ending is what ruined it for me. Horrible. The whole movie was set upt to be realistic, then the ending completely ruined it. HORRIBLE.

I found the alleged twist endings in both THE USUAL SUSPECTS and THE SIXTH SENSE to be anything but twist endings: I saw them both coming long long long before they finally happened. Likewise the alleged surprise in FIGHT CLUB. And SEVEN, too: think for a minute about which Deadly Sins haven't yet been enacted and you'll have the ending pretty much laid out for you. But that is the point. You have to actually THINK about what you're watching.
I still remember THE STING as being one of the better surprise endings, genuinely surprising and funny and not a cheat. And the finale of THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE was a real shock, painful and hilarious, I've never ever heard such an audience reaction before. I don't see how anyone could have seen that one coming.

the song CHAS by Dolly Parton from her masterpiece THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL
also the song CARROLL COUNTY ACCIDENT from her album JUST THE WAY I AM
the song TRAVELING MAN from COAT OF MANY COLORS
...& THESE OLD BONES from HALOS & HORNS
i wont give away the twists, but Dolly sure loves to pull her punches!

I remember being quite surprised in "Along Came a Spider" when we find out that Monica Potter's character is part of the kidnapping operation.

Good list, blueroses!
I would also add Witness For the Prosecution, which has no less that four major "twists" at the very end.
